Math Study Skills
Active Study vs. Passive Study
Be actively involved in managing the learning process, the mathematics and your study time:
  • Take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know, and knowing how to get your Instructor to help you with what you don't know.
  • Attend class every day and take complete notes. Instructors formulate test questions based on material and examples covered in class as well as on those in the text.
  • Be an active participant in the classroom. Get ahead in the book; try to work some of the problems before they are covered in class. Anticipate what the Instructor's next step will be.
  • Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
  • Go to office hours and ask questions. The Instructor will be pleased to see that you are interested, and you will be actively helping yourself.

Introduction First Things Planning Study Skills
    Introduction back to top
As a department chair from 1990-1997, I counselled most of the students to do not succeed in our department's engineering majors. Most students who fail academically, do so because of a few critical errors in judgement and in how they approach their studies. As a student (again) myself from 1984-1988, I became an avid student of "how to study" mathematically based subjects. I had the good fortune to learn some of the secrets of studying mathematically based subjects (such as statistics and engineering) and developed a few new techniques of my own. I have shared these methods with students on an individual basis and in numerous workshops and presentations. Students who have used these techniques report excellent results. The most effective way of communicating these techiques is in a workshop format. Unfortunately just reading this document leaves too much to the imagination.

For more information, visit http://www.academicsuccess.com/ . You can purchase books, videos, and tapes on math study skills, as well as take an evaluation to find out how good your math study skills are currently. How To Read Your Math Textbook The way you read a math textbook is different from the traditional way students are taught to read textbooks in other courses. There are several appropriate steps in reading a math textbook, as outlined below.
  • Skim the assigned reading material.
Skim the material to get a general idea about the major topics. Read the section objectives and the introductory paragraphs for each section. Also read the prerequisites listed at the beginning of each section so you know what prior knowledge is assumed. You do not want to learn the material at this time; you simply want to get an overview of the section.
  • As you skim the section, circle (using pencil) the new words you do not understand.

Here Are Some Study Tips . . .
Take control. Make a list of all the things you need to do.
Divide your workload into manageable chunks. Prioritize. Schedule your time realistically. Stick to your deadlines.
Get into the habit of actively studying each day.
Choose a quiet, nondistracting place to study.
Study for short focused blocks of time.
Organize new information. Create outlines, charts, flashcards, timelines, and concept maps to help you visualize relationships. Try to integrate what you're studying with what you already know.
Occasionally, study with a friend. Quiz each other, compare notes, discuss discrepancies.
When you feel yourself losing focus, switch the type of task you are working on, the subject that you are studying, or the environment that you are in. Take a break and walk around a bit. Stop studying when you are no longer being productive.
Review your notes just before going to sleep.
