modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds).
" I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."

BACKGROUND
The Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1967. At the time of the WTEC visit, this organization employed 450 persons (300 research staff and 140-150 engineers and technicians). Within the Institute there are 20 laboratories and an auxiliary services group. In addition, there are four field stations and the Far East State Marine Reserve. Two smaller research vessels support seagoing projects. In addition to the research ships, the institute conducts many dives to collect specimens and to do in situ research tasks. Most of the scientists are divers.

Ecology and Human Impact in the North and Baltic Seas
Fall and spring. MBE core course A comparative study of the ecosystems of the North and Baltic Seas and the way natural and human activities threaten to destroy their integrity. Terrestrial, limnic and aquatic ecological concepts and principles will be analyzed in the two very different seas. The course will also address relevant pollution issues, particularly in respect to chemicals and the invasion of alien species. Latest syllabus (pdf)
Instructor: Anders Drud Jordan Prerequisites At least one year of biology, including lab experience, and one semester of chemistry at university level. Objectives The course is designed to provide students with an introduction to marine ecology and with an understanding of how human activities can alter natural ecological processes in the marine environment. In addition, we demonstrate a hands-on approach to learning, and require students to participate actively in class, field and laboratory activities. Content The course addresses basic ecological principles using the North and Baltic Sea ecosystems as a focus for study, placing particular emphasis on the special challenges these systems face as a result of natural an human imposed stresses. Students will be introduced to the key features of the North and Baltic Sea ecosystems. The course will address fundamental ecological concepts at the population, community and ecosystem level of organization. We will examine problems related to eutrophication, oil exploitation, chemical discharges and fisheries. The specific consequences arising from various human activities, the problems related to their study and the challenges faced in attempting to manage or prevent adverse human impacts from occurring in the future will provide topics for analysis and debate.
