Culture
There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average Kenyan may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, the first question asked when two of them meet is 'What tribe are you from?'. English and Swahili are the languages taught throughout the country, but there are many other tribal languages. These include Kikuyu, Luhia, Luo and Kikamba as well as a plethora of minor tribal tongues. It's useful for the traveller to have a working knowledge of Swahili, especially outside the urban areas and in remote parts of the country. Another language you'll come across is Sheng, spoken almost exclusively by the younger members of society. A fairly recent development, Sheng is a mixture of Swahili and English along with a fair sprinkling of other languages. Most Kenyans outside the coastal and eastern provinces are Christians of one sort or another, while most of those on the coast and in the eastern part of the country are Muslim. Muslims make up some 30% of the population. In the more remote tribal areas you'll find a mixture of Muslims, Christians and those who follow their ancestral tribal beliefs.

The spread of the Bantu people was through migrations. These people were named after the language that they spoke. Bantu is a family of languages that are closely related and represent the largest linguistic family of African languages. Bantu speaking people migrated out of north-central Africa in the last century BC and these migrations continued all throughout the first millenium AD. They migrated south into the rain forest regions around the Congo and they migrated east into the East African highlands. Wherever they migrated, they imposed their language, which mixed with and replaced indiegenous languages. How they managed to impose their language on such a wide range of people across such a huge swathe of territory is anyone's guess. Further migrations in the first millenium then displaced the earlier Bantu immigrants, who pushed farther east and south.
Not only did the Bantu spread their language they also spread iron-smelting techniques across Africa, they also were responsible for diffusing agriculture,
particularly agriculture of high-yield crops such as yams, bananas, and plantains. The spread of agriculture led to the explosive growth of village life all throughout Africa.

Kenya Culture, Population and Tribes The population of Kenya is about 28 million. Almost all are of African descent. The largest minorities are Asians, Europeans and Arabs. These three minority groups together represent less than 1% of the population. The official languages are Swahili and English There are over 70 tribes found in Kenya. The majority of the tribes are descendants of just two language groups, the Bantu of Western Africa, and the Nilotic from the Nile Valley. As the larger cities attract more people, and as Kenya becomes more like the West, fewer and fewer Kenyans live a traditional tribal life. Tanzania Culture, Population and Tribes The population of Tanzania is around 29 million people. Like Kenya, almost all of the population is of African descent. The largest minorities are the Asians and Europeans in the cities, and Arabs on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The official languages are Swahili and English. The majority of the tribes in Tanzania, like the tribes in Kenya, belong to two language groups, the Bantus of Western Africa, and the Nilotics of the Nile Valley. The largest tribe of Nilotics descendants are the Maasai (also spelled Masai).

    Kenya Material Culture
Each of Kenya's ethnic groups has a wide range of material cultural products including architecture, cooking utensils, clothes, textiles, farming equipment, hunting tools, baskets, mats, head rests, shields, art works, carvings, sculpture, etc. The following only highlights a few cultural materials. However, most art and craft production is for the lucrative tourist market. A stroll in downtown Nairobi will reveal the diversity of items and quality available. Sculpture of poor quality and low price to museum quality work can be found in Kenya. The same goes for art; batiks, which are common, also vary dramatically in price and quality. Other items produced for the tourist market include sisal baskets, soapstone sculpture from Kisii, elephant hair (not real elephant hair) bracelets, Maasai bead jewelry, musical instruments, and silver and gold jewelry. One aspect of material culture that is important to Kenyans and not destined for the tourist market is the work of craftsmen who transform waste items into every day useful things. For example, old oil drums are turned into cooking pots or tiny stoves called jikos ; used tires are turned into sandals.
