Judicial Branch Article III of the Constitution provides that there shall be one Supreme Court and such inferior courts as Congress may "ordain and establish." The Judiciary Act of 1789 formally established the Supreme Court and federal court system. Supreme Court justices, court of appeals judges, and district court judges are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate after being reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee typically conducts confirmation hearings for each nominee. Article III of the Constitution states that these judicial officers are appointed for a life term.

Tile Supreme Court interprets the laws of the SGA as found in its governing documents. These documents, which include the SGA Constitution, statutes, and codes, are the standard of juctice the court works to uphold. From an interpretative standpoint, the Supreme Court issues rulings on the meaning and intent of the documents. This is especially true for any actions that are taken by SGA officials. When sitting as a tribunal, the Supreme Court hears cases on matters that concern violations of the governing documents. The 1995-96 school year was especially busy for the Court, which heard two major cases in addition to its regular duties. In a precedent- setting decision, the Student Supreme Court heard impeachment proceedings brought against the SGA President. In addition, the Court heard a case involving SGA elections and major violations of the Election Code. However, through all of the controversy and media attention surrounding these blockbuster cases, the Supreme Court kept in focus its commitiment to the upholding of the intent and letter of law. The members of the Court are dedicated to the principles of justice and righteousness.

misunderstood by citizens. This web site is designed to answer some
of your questions about Kentucky's Court of Justice, one of our three
branches of government, and to familiarize you with its operation. Government should be a servant of the people. It is vitally important
that Kentuckians understand how it works. The judicial branch of state
government guards our constitutional rights as citizens of Kentucky

awareness of our justice system can we support and defend
its principles and learn to use it properly. This web page will provide you a better understanding of your

http://www.geocities.com/djconhoo/
The Temple of Karnak: An Unexpurgated History of the Supreme Court Our founders designed a government with three independent branches, each with a limited role to play. The role of the judicial branch was limited to deciding "cases and controversies" in accordance with laws made by elected representatives of "We the People." As Alexander Hamilton explained the constitutional design in Federalist Number 78, The Judiciary, on the contrary, has no influence over either the sword or the purse; no direction either of the strength or wealth of the society, and can take no active resolution whatever. It may truly be said to have neither force nor will but merely judgement; and must ultimately depend upon the aid of the executive arm even for the efficacy of its judgements. Hamilton went on to assure his fellow citizens in Federalist Number 81 that they could rely on Congress to punish "judiciary encroachments on the legislative authority" by impeachment and removal of the encroaching judges. There never can be danger that the judges, by a series of deliberate usurpations on the authority of the legislature, would hazard the united resentment of the body intrusted (sic) with it (the power of impeachment and removal), while this body was possessed of the means of punishing their presumption, by degrading them from their stations.

Chief Justice Warns: Budget Cuts Will Reduce Access
Landmark reforms in the California courts have expanded access to court services, yet budget reductions threaten to undo major benefits to the public, declared Chief Justice Ronald M. George in his annual "State of the Judiciary" Address to a joint session of the California Legislature. "Our overall goal is to keep California's courts open not just physically, but also effectively especially for those who are least able to help themselves and who must rely upon the courts," said Chief Justice George.
