Description
This course explores nostalgia in modern Jewish thought and practices. We will analyse how nostalgia, at times, serves to legitimise as well as replace religious observance. We will explore the intersection between theology, history, memory, leisure activities and consumption in an effort to comprehend the role of the Jewish past for the construction of modern Jewish culture. We will examine Jewish historiography, postcards and lithographs, museums, historical landmarks, and tourism. Course readings include writings by Graetz, Buber, Rosenzweig, Freud, Yerushalmi and Eisen. Summary of teaching and learning methods
This course will be delivered primarily through student-led weekly seminars. Students will be asked to prepare for each seminar by following the recommended reading and for individual presentations on the examination of specific sources. Brief summary of content
Course requirements
a) All students must attend classes and prepare for them by reading the texts, which are indicated as essential. All students will be expected to contribute to the discussion and to give two presentations.

According to figures of the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute of the Jewish Agency, 50,000 Jews are lost every year mostly through assimilation, intermarriage, and loss of Jewish identity worldwide. An International Emergency Conference on Jewish Demography was held by the Institute during late November in Jerusalem, and was open to the public. Among the participants were Chairman of the Institute, Ambassador Dennis Ross, Founding President, Prof. Yehezkel Dror, Prof. SergioDella Pergula, Prof. Irwin Cotler, and Director General Avinoam Bar-Yosef. Jewish Museums Curators and Directors Seminar hosted by the Agency's P2P Center
The Jewish Agency's People-to-People Center, together with the Rich Foundation for Education, Culture and Welfare as well as Beth Hatefutsoth held a Conference of Directors and Curators of Jewish museums from around the world. The conference entitled "The Jewish Museum in a Changing World" took place last week at the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. It hosted personnel from Jewish museums in New York, Brussels, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Manchester, Stockholm, Prague, Berlin and others. The sessions included "Displaying the Past or Designing the Future", "Israeli Art and Culture in the Jewish Museum", and "Integrating New Media Technologies in the Museum".

Passover is just around the bend and many of us are on the lookout for information that will make the holiday a bit easier. kashrut.com not only has excellent kashrut information, their section on travel; Kosher Travel is an excellent resource for those of us who keep kosher and like to travel. One word of caution - many of the links are not in English but in the native language of the country being described. However, there is enough English to help you, except for the French site - why am I not surprised.

One of the less known Jewish traditions is the counting of the omer. The site Homer Calendar is a definite visit. It's cute and although a bit slow, has excellent background information on the tradition as well as a calendar etc., all with the help of (H)omer Simpson. Doohh!

Treasures of Jewish Art: Documenting an Endangered Legacy
By Ariella Amar and Ruth Jacoby
Jerusalem, 1998
In English and Hebrew. 140 pages, with 113 color illustrations This handsome publication, dedicated to the 50 th Anniversary of the State of Israel, is a sampling of remarkable finds from 10 countries showing the variety and beauty of the Jewish artistic tradition. The photographs are supplemented by a general introduction by Prof. Bezalel Narkiss, an introduction to each country, and condensed descriptions of each object with the preliminary results of research. Of special interest are the photos of Jewish art and architecture taken in Eastern Europe, Asia and North Africa. The endangered Jewish communities in these regions have undergone massive upheavals in the 20 th century and, often, the Center's documentation is the last witness that Jews once thrived there.
