JEWISH MUSEUM INFORMATION Jewish Museums The Council of American Jewish Museums (CAJM) encourages and furthers the development of North American Jewish museums in collecting, preserving, studying, exhibiting and interpreting Jewish art and artifacts. The Council promotes cooperative efforts and resource sharing, public educational outreach, new research and scholarship, and understanding and support of Jewish museums among Jewish, general and museum communities. Founded in 1977 under the auspices of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, with only seven members, CAJM now includes over 70 institutions in United States and Canada and over 40 individual members.
Bruno Schulz Forum
When Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Museum, "rescued" several wartime paintings of Bruno Schulz from a house in Drogobicz, Poland; the reaction was diverse and passionate: was this a heroic and just act or misguided act of theft? To explore the issues surrounding this controversy, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture covered a panel discussion involving artists, writers, Jewish community leaders, and a Polish intellectual. JEWISH CULTURE NEWS

Jewish Museums After September 11 Participants in this year’s Council of American Jewish Museums (CAJM) conference in Cincinnati were privy to a thought-provoking program addressing the theme of “Changing Identities,” especially in the wake of September 11th. Dr. Gary Zola of the American Jewish Archives spoke about the upcoming 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America. Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett’s keynote address, which is excerpted below, was compelling and memorable. Conference participants enjoyed visiting some of Cincinnati’s historical and cultural attractions—the tour included the Plum Street Synagogue, the U.S. Air Force Museum and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Given a long history of responding to violence that was targeted specifically to Jews, are Jewish museums equipped to respond to events like this? That is, to an event that had its Jewish victims, but who were not singled out for being Jewish. Who is documenting Jewish experiences and responses to the events of September 11th? Many issues faced by museums in the wake of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Towers are ones that Jewish museums have been addressing since the Holocaust. In the face of the current disaster, Jewish museums have a special role to play. They also have the opportunity to learn from the many efforts currently underway to document, memorialize, and interpret the traumatic events that are transforming our lives.

Merger is official: Two local Jewish museums unite
ALEZA GOLDSMITH Bulletin Staff Berkeley's Judah L. Magnes Museum and the Jewish Museum San Francisco officially became one this month. Under the rubric of a singular institution, the newly named Magnes Museum combined facilities, collections, boards, staff and budgets as of Jan. 1. "We're committed to making an efficient, economically sound institution that meets the needs of the community," said Connie Wolf, executive director of the Magnes Museum. "Our hope is that people will wonder how we ever existed apart, since it's so logical to be together." A unanimous vote to merge into one museum with two locations was cast at a joint meeting of the museums' executive committees, following tentative approval by the full boards of directors in July. At that time, Wolf, the Jewish Museum director and chief operating officer, was selected to take the reins. Since then, "a lot of work has been happening behind the scenes" to rethink the makeup of the staff, board, bylaws, programming, capital projects and other structural issues, said Wolf. New bylaws and procedures have been drafted, and the boards have been combined into one 71-member entity that will hold its first meeting in early February. The membership of the separate museums was also united into one, as were the separate staffs.

Tuesday's de-merger vote by the Magnes executive committee, which could be approved by the full board as early as next month, capped a wild week in which the museum's chair, Warren Hellman, and Daniel Offit, co-chair, resigned abruptly on Monday. The move tossed both Berkeley's Judah L. Magnes Museum and the Jewish Museum San Francisco into a sea of uncertainty. "We don't even know yet what's involved," said executive committee member Frances Dinkelspiel.

NEW ROLE FOR JEWISH MUSEUMS
“The Jewish Museum in a Changing World” is the topic of a unique Hanukah 2002 gathering of some 60 directors and curators of Jewish museums from throughout Israel and the world. The conference will focus on the Jewish museum in Europe, assisting the development of the nascent association of Jewish museums in Europe, and helping to connect the European museums to counterparts in Israel and the rest of the world. The gathering is an outgrowth of a partnership of the People-to-People Center, Bet Hatfutsot and the Rich Foundation; the idea was raised in a world forum of leaders of Jewish cultural institution sponsored by this partnership in December 2001. The Association of Jewish Museums of North America will also be sending representatives to the conference. Among the central discussions of the conference will be the place of Israel in the Jewish museum in Europe and the role of the Jewish museum in Jewish-identity formation. The conference opening, at which 250 participants are expected, will be addressed by writer A.B. Yehoshua, Minister of Culture Matan Vilnai, and JAFI Chairman Sallai Meridor.
