In 1919, Italy became a member of the ILO as a founding country (the ILO Constitution is part of the Peace treaties adopted by the Peace Conference in April 1919.) The Rome office opened in 1920.
In 1933, the office moved to Villa Aldobrandini following an agreement between the Italian government, UNIDROIT (International Institute for the Unification of Private Law, to whom the building is entrusted) and the ILO.
In 1937, Italy withdrew from the League of Nations and also left the ILO. It resumed being on the ILO in 1945. The presence of the Rome Office in Villa Aldobrandini was interrupted and then resumed after the war on the basis of a new agreement with UNIDROIT, under the patronage of the Italian government.
In 1964, the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin initiated its activities, in collaboration with the Italian Government and the municipality of Turin, in the area in which were held the centennial celebrations for the Unification of Italy.

Italy's History
Beginnings of Global Conquest
Most of Italy's history centers around ancient Rome, the seat of the Roman Empire. The rich and powerful people of ancient Rome were the patricians, who governed the city from the Senate, and the equites, or men of property. All the social and most political power was in the hands of a few ancient families, such as Cornelii, the Julii ( the family of the Caesers) and the Aemilii. Most patricians had, beside their house at Rome, a family farm in the country and a number of villas in pleasant spots of Latium in central Italy or in the south. Town and contry houses alike were beautifully built and designed for their owner's comfort. Ceasar's Legacy in Italy
The Romans believed in making their sons fine soilders. So, after a young man became a Roman citizen, he was enlisted on his first military campaign. On his return from military service, the son of a patrician almost always entered into politics, and the sons of equites sometimes did the same. A young man first stood for election as an aedile, or city councillor. Perhaps the most famous young patrician son was Gaius Julius Ceasar, born in the year 100 BC whose family claimed decendancy from the kings of Alba Langa and through them, Aeneas of Troy whose mother was the goddess Venus. Caesar's name Julius comes from Iulius, the family name. This comes from Iulus, the name of Venus' son.

History and Government
History: Although Italy has only been unified since 1861, the rich and complex history of the peninsula has, perhaps more than that of any other country, influenced the course of European development, particularly in the fields of culture and political thought. The most important early settlers in the area were the Etruscans, who had established settlements in northern Italy by the sixth century BC. By the third century BC, the city state of Rome, having subdued most of the peninsula, was intent on extending its influence elsewhere. At its greatest extent, the Empire (so called after 30 BC) made the Mediterranean a Roman lake and for several centuries conferred on its inhabitants the benefits of the Pax Romana : culture (mainly Hellenic in origin), law, relative peace and comparative prosperity.

Three generations, the grandfather Vincenzo, the son Mario, the grandson Giovanni, write the success story of the Valentino family. Indeed in 1908, after a period of professional training in Paris, Vincenzo returns to Naples to found the first VALENTINO fashion house. The great talent of this designer is soon recognised in Italy and abroad. His creations rapidly become the aspiration of an international clientele that includes not only the Italian Royal family and Caruso, but also Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo and Fred Astaire.
In the early fifties, Mario takes over the family business and follows in his father's footsteps with great enthusiasm and remarkable talent. Thanks to the stylistic attributes of the youth, in 1954, VOGUE France dedicates its cover page, for the first time in history, to a creation bearing the griffe VALENTINO. His collections win the acclaim of press and public at the fashion shows of Rome, Milan and Paris and the brand boasts the most distinguished clients of the international 'jet set'.
Today this unique and prestigious heritage is preserved in GIOVANNI VALENTINO, a griffe that unites avant-garde creativity with the treasured skills of artisans, maintaining and enhancing this precious family tradition.

Program Locations Argentina Austria Bolivia Brazil Chile Costa Rica Dominican Republic Ecuador France Germany Greece Guatemala Italy Mexico Peru Portugal Puerto Rico Russia Spain Venezuela History In Rome, there is visible evidence of the two great empires of the western world: the Roman Empire and the Christian Church. From the Foro Romano and the Colosseo to the Basilica di San Pietro and Il Vaticano and in almost every piazza, lies history on so many levels that the saying 'Rome, a lifetime is not enough' must certainly be true. It is generally agreed that Rome had its origins in a group of Etruscan, Latin and Sabine settlements on the Palatino, Esquilino and Quirinale hills. These and surrounding hills constitute the now-famous seven hills of Rome. Ancient Romans put the date of their city's foundation as 21 April 753 BC and, indeed, archaeological discoveries have confirmed the existence of a settlement on the Palatino in that period. It is, however, the legend of Romulus and Remus which prevails. The twin sons of Rhea Silvia and the war god Mars, according to legend they were raised by a she-wolf after being abandoned on the banks of the Tevere (Tiber) river. The myth says Romulus killed his brother during a battle over who should govern, and then established the city of Rome on the Palatino.

    Welcome to my web site!
This site is about the gondola and my gondola yard . Since the gondola is one of the most interesting boats in the world, and it is fast on the way to becoming extinct, I felt that it was important to pay it a tribute through this site. If you are interested in traditional boats and how they are made, I invite you to look around. I hope you enjoy this information on the gondola, and I hope you will write to me and tell me what you think of my web site.
    What is a Gondola?
The gondola is an ancient rowing craft used in the canals of Venice, Italy. Venice, an island in a lagoon, has streets of water for boat traffic rather than streets of asphalt for automobile traffic, and it is one of the most fascinating cities in the world for its boats. There are many different kinds of boats in Venice, but the most well known is the gondola: a boat used for carrying up to 6 passengers. Apart from the common gondola used for the tourist trade, there is also the gondola traghetto, which is used to ferry passengers across the grand canal, carrying up to 20 people at a time for pocket change; the gondola regatta, used for racing; and the gondolino, also used for racing, but which is lighter and faster.
