History At the End of 18th Century The Italian political and territorial picture, which at the end of the 18C seemed to have stabilised, rapidly disintegrated in the face of Napoleon Bonaparte 's first military campaign across the peninsula so as to successfully attack the Austrian Empire on its southern flank. After the Peace of Paris (16 May 1796) reached with the neighbouring kingdom of Savoy, that of Campoformio (17 October 1797) marked the end of the now enfeebled Republic of Venice. The latter was exchanged with Austria for the Duchy of Milan, which went to form the Repubblica Transpadana (November 1796). With Napoleon's entry into Italy there came also the new ideas of liberty diffused from the French Revolution and these had an immediate effect. After the French occupation of the territory of the Papal Legations in 1796, in August of the same year the ducal government of Reggio (Emilia) was overthrown and in the following December the Repubblica Cispadana was proclaimed. This latter included the rest of Emilia and adopted for the first time a flag with the present-day white, red and green colours. On 29 June 1797 the two republics were joined in the new

THE 166TH IN ITALY Apart from the expected and accepted trials and dangers of fighting a war, the summer and fall of 1944 in Italy was a fairly pleasant experience. The German Army was slowly withdrawing northwards and there were no major battles as the British and Allied Forces maintained sufficient pressure to ensure that some forward momentum was maintained. After the battle for Cassino and the subsequent breakthrough the 166th Newfoundland Field Regiment, Royal Artillery moved forward with the Infantry through Rome and through the heart of Italy the hills and plains of Lombardia. It was harvest time, the end of the war seemed to be drawing nearer and the days were warm and sunny. The air seemed filled with music as the farmers returned from the fields in the evening and from the long lines of carts carrying the labourers a pleasant, seemingly endless chant of music and song could be heard as they passed by our guns. The song of the field workers was called "Stornelli di Compagna" and the beautiful melody still lingers. The river Arno was crossed and the beautiful city of Florence was taken without much damage being inflicted by the retreating Germans or the advancing Allied forces.

B.C. , except for the regions (S Italy and Sicily) where the Greeks had established colonies (see Magna Graecia ). The earliest known inhabitants seem to have been of Ligurian stock. In the 12th cent. it became a free commune and gradually gained supremacy over the cities of Lombardy. From the 11th to the 13th cent. Milan suffered from internal warfare between rich and poor, from the Guelph and Ghibelline strife, and from the enmity of rival cities, which assisted Emperor Frederick I in destroying it (1163). As a member of the Lombard League, Milan later contributed to the defeat of Frederick I at Legnano (1176). The city's independence was recognized in the Peace of Constance (1183). In the 13th cent. Milan lost its republican liberties; first the Torriani, then the Visconti (1277) became its lords. Galeazzo Visconti received (1395) the title of duke of Milan from the emperor, and under him the duchy became one of the most important states in Italy. And the pungent aroma of Provolone and soppresatta wafted in the air. People talked loud and fast. Old men hung around discussing "business." Kids played in fire hydrants. Today, Little Italy is much smaller, but the sights, smells, sounds and excitement remain. Mulberry Street is still its "Main Street." Dozens of restaurants, most of them with al fresco dining, whether at a sidewalk café or a cool rear garden, line Mulberry. Virtually all of them feature southern Italian food and most do an A+ job of pleasing the palate and filling the belly at a decent price. There is also a handful of Italian cafes, the granddaddy of which is Ferrara's, founded in 1898. There is also a small number of delis, cheese shops and bakeries, as well as one of the best fresh pasta makers in New York, Piemonte Ravioli. The biggest, most colorful street festival is held on Mulberry Street every September over the course of two weeks.

The santuario is a site of a 14th century apparition of Our Lady. Our Lady appeared to a local man and spoke the word "mercy" three times here. This is the only Marian shrine in the diocese of Subiaco. This house and church which was the first residence of our seminarians, is now a house for the postulants and Professed Sisters Esperanza, and Sr. Helen. It is located about 3 km from the main road on the mountainside above Marano Equo. The sisters also have the House of St. Therese in the town of Marano Equo, where they run a preschool for the children of the town. This is the home of our novices and two professed sisters; Sr. Ann, and Sr. Jessa. The seminarians now live at St. Chelidonia Parish in Vignolo near Subiaco.
