That's my mugshot just below, which you can click for a slightly larger picture, or find a few more photos of me My name is Dan Karran and I'm a 20 year old student, originally from the Isle of Man . Do you share my name ? I'm trying to find anyone who does, and so far I've found just one... In June 2000, I finished a two year A-level course at Castle Rushen High School. The A-levels which I studied were Computing Geography General Studies and Maths Mechanics . By August I had received my results - they were B,C,B and E (respectively). In September 2000, I started at UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology), studying Computing and Geography with Industrial Experience - a joint course between UMIST and the University of Manchester . You may be wondering - why choose that course? Well, they are two subjects I enjoy and find interesting. You can find out a bit more about my time at uni on my university page...

Waking Ned was one of the earlier films to be shot on the Isle of man. island stories:
isle of man J ust under 10 years ago, I was doing daily papers at a film-industry trade show in Nice. Nestling in among the big service providers, right next to French stunt master Rémy Julienne’s flash stand, was the Isle of Man Film Commission. Having grown up on Merseyside, where the Isle of Man was the place you went to on your hols when you’d outgrown Rhyl but weren’t quite ready for the Costa Brava, I was intrigued. I went and talked to the nice people running the stand, who pointed out the many advantages of the island - a 30-mile long, 10-mile wide piece of rock in the Irish Sea more or less equidistant between Liverpool and Dublin. The IOM has its own language (Manx), its own parliament and, more importantly, its own tax system which currently attracts a wide range of service companies. From a film-maker’s point of view it also has, like New Zealand, the ability to look like almost anywhere else if you dress it right and shoot it carefully enough. Thus, said the man from the IOMFC, it surely made sense to try and promote it as a place for people to make films. I wasn’t entirely convinced but duly wrote up the piece. The following day, I spoke to US producer Edward R Pressman, who said he’d read the story and was going to check out the island, known to its inhabitants as ‘The Rock’. I wrote that up, too, and the man from the IOMFC was delighted. Then I forgot about the Isle of Man for a while.

A chieftain? A god? A wizard? Just who was Manannan Mac y Leir, Son of the Sea? Part fact, part fantasy, he exists like the mists that can surround the isle he once ruled, Ellan Vannin, The Isle of Man. I first glimpsed the mystic isle from the belly of a Manx Airlines plane, as it swooped low on its approach to Ronaldsway airport. The isle emerged through wisps of grey cloud, an emerald jewel spotted with dabs of yellow gorse and set amid the coiled dragon that is the Irish Sea. Only 33 miles long and 12 miles at its widest, its story is as long and broad as nations many times its size. A tiny cousin to its neighbouring islands, this isle has charted its own unique course and continues to assert its independent spirit. A patchwork quilt still in the making, it folds out to reveal traces of the people who drew breath there, the forces of nature which formed it, the mysticism surrounding it and a uniqueness shaped by geography and circumstances. It is a very visible tartan, still in the making. Blocks of green, blue and grey dappled with yellow gorse, purple heather and white cottages, ringed about by grey stone fences or overgrown with wild fuchsia, capture the eye. Sheep dot a thousand shades of green, which rise up windswept barrules or fall away steeply to a hungry sea. Roofless tholtans (cottages) whisper untold stories.

Among its earliest inhabitants were Celts, and their language, Manx, which is closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic, remained the everyday speech of the people until the first half of the 19th century. Manx now has no native speakers. Norse (Viking) invasions began about 800, and the island was a dependency of Norway until 1266. During this period the Isle of Man came under a Scandinavian system of government that has remained practically unchanged ever since. The island came under the control of England in 1341. After allowing a succession of feudal lords to rule the island, the British Parliament purchased sovereignty over the island in 1765. The Isle of Man continues to be administered according to its own laws by a government composed of the lieutenant governor, a legislative council, and a House of Keys, one of the most ancient legislative assemblies in the world.
