Authority and collector Khalili to explore glories of Islamic art By David J. Craig Islamic religion and culture may be poorly understood in the West, but the intrinsic beauty of Islamic art, with its exquisite use of color and sophisticated balance of design and form, is immediately and universally appealing. And in recent years, Western scholars have begun to seriously study Islamic art in its own context in order to better understand the cultures from which it derives, rather than simply appreciating the art in accordance with Western aesthetics. Iron and steel war mask made in the late 15th century, possibly in Akkoyunlu, a state founded by Turkoman tribes in 1350 and stretching from the Caspian Sea to modern-day Syria during its 15th-century heyday. The owner of one of the most important Islamic art collections in the world and a scholar and benefactor of Islamic art of international standing, Nasser David Khalili will present a lecture entitled The Art of Islam: A Glorious Tradition, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 10, at the Tsai Performance Center at 685 Commonwealth Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Islam Islamic Art and Architecture Introduction to Islamic Art by Zarah Hussain Islamic art is vibrant and distinctive, and creates an immediate visual impact. Unlike "Christian art", Islamic art isn't restricted to religious art, but includes all the artistic traditions in Muslim culture. Its strong aesthetic appeal transcends time and space, as well as differences in language and culture. This is because of common features in all Islamic art which give it a remarkable coherence, regardless of the country or the time in which it was created. There are, however, strong regional characteristics, and influences from other cultures are also visible. The Essentials of Islamic art
  • Includes all Muslim art, not just explicitly religious art Islamic art seeks to portray the meaning and essence of things, rather than just their physical form Crafts and Decorative Arts are regarded as having full art status Painting and sculpture are not thought of as the noblest forms of art Calligraphy is a major art-form
    • Writing has high status in Islam Writing is a significant decoration for objects and buildings Books are a major art-form
Geometry and patterns are important People do not appear in specifically religious art

Religions Islam UK ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Islam America's first Muslim stamp The United States Postal Service has acknowledged the contribution Muslims make to their country by issuing a commemorative stamp. The Eid stamp commemorates the two most important festivals—or eids—in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. On these days, Muslims wish each other "Eid mubarak," the phrase featured in Islamic calligraphy on the stamp. "Eid mubarak" translates literally as "blessed festival," and can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed." Design The Eid stamp was designed by Zakariya of Arlington in Virginia, who created it using traditional methods and instruments. The script is known in Arabic as "thuluth" and in Turkish as "sulus." Zakariya describes it as "the choice script for a complex composition due to its open proportions and sense of balance." Materials The designer used homemade black ink, and pens made from seasoned reeds from the Near East and Japanese bamboo from Hawaii. The paper was specially prepared with a coating of starch and three coats of alum and egg-white varnish, then burnished with an agate stone and aged for more than a year.

Sackler Museum, and Former Senior Lecturer, Harvard University Works Come from One of the Finest Collections of Its Kind in Private Hands and Continue the Long Tradition of Harvard Alumni and Scholars Furthering the Collections of the Art Museums "We are deeply moved by Cary’s generosity. He is widely regarded as the leading connoisseur of Turko-Indo-Iranian art in the West, as well as being a legendary teacher and influential curator and author," said Cuno. "For more than forty years, Cary has shared his knowledge of and love for the arts of Islam and India with students, colleagues, friends, and the museum-going public. His gift will ensure that Harvard students for many generations to come have the opportunity to study and be inspired by the arts of these cultures." In making this gift, Mr. Welch stated: "Students at Harvard have the immense privilege, as I did in my student days, of examining and sometimes handling collections unrivaled by those in other university art museums. Eyes and brains are nurtured by close contact with the arts of the entire world. And Harvard’s great art museums offer precisely that opportunity to students. As a curator, I most loved planning and carrying out exhibitions; as well, teaching has always been deeply satisfying to me. Showing and explaining works of art to enthusiastic, motivated students at Harvard was a central part of my experience there. For me, sharing a work of art with another person doubles its quality and meaning."
