Through Local Libraries Information Statewide Programs Legislation AEA Directory Board Room AEA Home
Sept. 17 EBSCOhost, a Web-based information resource with links to thousands of full-text magazines, newspapers, and graphics, is now available to all Iowans 24 hours a day through their local public, school and college libraries. Iowans of all ages will be able to use the resources available through EBSCOhost to stay up-to-date on current topics such as finances, health, parenting, even gardening. Students who need to do research can use EBSCOhost at school, at college, at their local public library or at home. The resources cover virtually any area of interest. Some of the popular publications included are Consumer Reports Psychology Today Newsweek National Geographic and Time , to name a few. "These resources will be a valuable component of Iowa libraries' offerings," said State Librarian Mary Wegner. "Library Web sites and databases let people access an unbelievable amount of information on topics of interest to everyone, 24 hours a day." Access is made possible through a partnership between the State Library and Iowa Area Education Agencies. Funding is provided by the State Library using federal Library Services and Technology Act dollars, by local libraries and Area Education Agencies.

Release: Immediate (CORRECTED VERSION) New endowment named at University of Iowa Libraries IOWA CITY, Iowa Arthur Benton, professor emeritus in neurology in the UI College of Medicine, has created two endowments to support visiting lecturers and professional development at the UI Libraries. The Arthur Benton Excellence in Reference Services Professional Development Award will be given biennially to a professional staff member at the UI Libraries who has demonstrated outstanding commitment in providing reference service. The award will support the recipient's professional development activities related to the advancement of reference services that include conferences, workshops or research projects and publications. The Ada M. Stoflet Lectureship was created in memory of Ada M. Stoflet, a dedicated member of the UI Libraries staff for three decades and head of the Main Library Research Department. The lecture will take place every other year and focus on a topic of interest to the staff of the Libraries. A longtime supporter of the UI Libraries, Benton was a professor in the Department of Neurology. He is an internationally renowned neuropsychologist whose career has spanned more than 60 years. He was given the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology by the American Psychological Foundation in 1992.

Release: Immediate Mystery writer donates papers to the University of Iowa Libraries IOWA CITY, Iowa Max Allan Collins, an award-winning author, filmmaker and comic strip writer, has deposited his personal papers with the University of Iowa Libraries. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop and a resident of Muscatine. His projects include more than 48 novels, comic strips such as the internationally syndicated Dick Tracy (1977-1993), comic series, screenplays and two feature-length films. Collins is known for his traditional hard-boiled mysteries, including the Nate Heller and Eliot Ness historical novels which reflect contemporary situations. He has written novels based on movie scripts and television characters such as "In the Line of Fire," "Maverick," "Waterworld," and a novel based on the "NYPD Blue" television series. In addition to scripting the Dick Tracy comic strip, Collins co-created the comic book Ms. Tree and has written the Batman comic book and the newspaper strip. His current project is Mike Danger, co-created with best-selling mystery writer Mickey Spillane.

Why the University of Iowa Libraries has not licensed the online version of Nature The University of Iowa Libraries recognizes the importance of Nature and the Nature monthlies as among the most influential scientific journals published. We are eager to provide campus-wide access to Nature in electronic format, but find that we, like many research libraries, cannot agree to the terms andconditions that the Nature Publishing Group has proposed. Our specific concerns fall into three areas.
  • The current institutional license terms include a 12-issue delay for selected sections of Nature and a 3-issue delay for portions of the Nature monthlies. In contrast, individual subscribers have immediate online access to the full content of these titles. Analysis by another CIC institution suggests that approximately 40% of content would be withheld for
