The administrator shortage. A Crisis In The Making Factors contributing to the shortage Strategies to address the shortage Iowa is facing a leadership crisis in K-12 education. At a time when the demands for improving the nature and quality of educational experiences for Iowa's young people are greater than ever, fewer and fewer educators are choosing to go into school administration. For example, there typically are only about 15-18 individuals who apply for superintendent vacancies in Iowa. Even worse, if a district is advertising for a high school principal/athletic director combination, it can only expect to receive about 10-12 applicants for the position. In visiting with the higher education community, we are finding that fewer and fewer teachers are attending classes to become school administrators. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that there are literally hundreds of individuals in Iowa who are certified as school administrators but who have chosen not to seek employment as educational leaders. The bottom line is that we are facing a leadership crisis in Iowa because of a shortage of school administrators. Unless we take some immediate and proactive steps to address this situation, Iowa will be shortchanging the future of the next several generations.

Building on this long tradition of service, the School Social Work Association of America was formed as a national organization of School Social Workers dedicated to the promotion of the profession. The best school social work services are provided by School Social Workers employed by local education agencies. Those agencies include local school districts, regional school agencies and special education agencies. School Social Workers provide a vital link among the school, home and community. Most School Social Workers are involved in providing services to all students. Most provide direct services to students and their families including casework, group work and classroom presentations as well as providing crisis intervention and consultation and making referrals to community agencies. School Social Workers are part of the assessment process for special education students as well as often providing direct and indirect services to those students.
