The Topic:
Biographies
Easier - A biography is a written story of a person's life. It is also a type of book. Harder - Biographies are written stories of a person's life that were written by someone else, while an autobiography is a person's story written by themselves. Biographies make past history more real and easier to understand by telling about real people and actual events. People reading the biography can satisfy their curiosity about well-known individuals and can experience historical events as though they were actually present. A good biography presents the facts about the person's life including what the subject did and how they influenced their world. It should describe the person's personality and provide an explanation for why he or she acted in certain ways. Most biographies are interpretive; they not only present the facts but also tell what those facts mean. Biographers make their writings accurate by learning as much as possible about their subjects. They study materials such as diaries, personal letters, and autobiographies. A good biography should be objective and balanced, but those lofty goals are not always achieved. Some biographers present a biased view by selectively presenting only the facts that portray the subject in either a favorable or an unflattering way.

Lesson Materials: Be Inventive - Here's a classroom activity from the Boston Museum of Science that asks students to create their own inventions to solve a problem of their own choosing. Based arounsd Leonardo DaVinci's and the properties of simple machines, the unit asks students to design their own invention. Moving Along with Simple Machines Grades 3-5 - Here's a four-week unit on simple machines developed by Georgia's Henry County Public Schools. The unit includes machine-specific activities, as well as connections to social studies, language arts, and other subject areas. Simple Machines Lesson - A 1995 paper delivered for Texas science educators, this page, nonetheless offers lots of activities and lesson ideas for teaching about simple machines. All text, but useful text! Web Resources: Ancient Inventions - Grades 4-8 This is a collection of inventions from antiquity compiled by students and faculty at Smith College. There are scores of ancient oddities, with photos and descriptions of each. It's a great site to show that people have been inventing things for centuries. Exploring Leonardo Grades 4 - 12 How Things Work Complete Computer Solutions - Grades K-12 Read a text explanation of how a fountain pen works or how a pneumatic hammer works. This would be a great reference for students of physics or inventions. It would also go well in a unit on inventions for any age, though the reading level is middle school or above.

In addition to the explosively growing cellular phone industry, other wireless devices such as global positioning satellite (GPS) units, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, wireless local area network (WLAN) cards are also rapidly diffusing through our everyday lives, evolving from luxury items to essential commodities. This growth is likely to continue with no slower pace until realization of ubiquitous wireless network. This relentless pace of growth and diversification of the wireless market has continuously motivated new researches in silicon-based RF integrated circuit (IC) design. RF ICs in wireless transceivers have proved to be design bottlenecks in today's complex, high-performance wireless communication systems. The need for robust performance and low cost has resulted in a great thrust towards system-on-a-chip implementation. In this presentation, I will talk about the recent advances and future direction in silicon-based RF ICs. Design challenges and possible solutions in implementing a single-chip-radio in the high-frequency silicon environment will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to our current research projects, that is, soliton/pulse-based integrated circuits for ultra wide band (UWB) wireless communication, distributed IC design techniques, oscillator linewidth self-narrowing, and stochastic resonance electronics.
