The Historical Internet?
Founded in 1495 by Italian Wizard Tele Nettie, the Internet was originally known as " " or, loosely translated, "We're sorry, but all circuits are busy at this time..." After generations of hard work and government deregulation, the Tele Nettie family finally achieved what they desired, a reliable connection from one room to another that lasted more than 2 minutes! They then changed their name to TelNet to avoid embarrassment. The youngest members of the family, Archie and Veronica, then moved to this country where they adopted a pet named Gopher and the three of them went to work refining the family dream. Now, years later, the Internet has become a reality for families, individuals and businesses worldwide. We at 1Wizards.Net would like to take credit for all of this, but honesty demands that we be more modest than that.

    Looking Back On Three Decades
    Of Internet History
New York, NY As reported by George Johnson for the New York Times, thirty years ago, on Oct. 29, the inaugural message was sent over the first thin reed of what was to become the Internet. It was nothing so portentous as "What hath God wrought," the words christening the telegraph in 1844. It was just the simple word "login." There were only two nodes on what was then known as the Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet built by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency. As the story has become enshrined in the folklore, a U.C.L.A. student named Charley Kline tapped out the letters "l" and "o," which were dutifully echoed back by a computer at the Stanford Research Institute (S.R.I.), a center about 300 miles northwest in what was not yet Silicon Valley. When he typed the third letter, "g," the S.R.I. computer was supposed to recognize and complete the full command. Instead, the letters caused a memory buffer to overflow, bringing down the system. But it was an exceedingly minor crash, said Bill Duvall, who was tweaking the connection on the Stanford end. The buffer size was increased and the first connection was flawlessly made.

    Hobbes' Internet Timeline
    ARPANET, In the Beginning
It started as a network called ARPANET. ARPANET was a Department of Defense (DoD) Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) experimental packet-switched network started back in 1969. This network initially linked researchers with remote computer centers allowing them to share computational resources. Other networks were were connected using the internetwork technology sponsored by DARPA.
    MILNET split
In the early 1980's ARPANET split into ARPANET and MILNET.
    NSFNET
In 1986 the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) was formed, which linked researchers across the country with five supercomputer centers. NSFnet soon expanded to connect the midlevel and larger academic networks that connected universities and research consortiums.
    COMMERICAL INTERNET
In 1995 the NSFnet backbone migrated to a high speed network between special sites. Commerical traffice was migrated to commerical network providers.

First international connections made to England and Norway. Unix to Unix Copy Protocol (UUCP) developed at Bell Labs. Usenet established using UUCP between Duke University and University of North Carolina Because It's Time Network (BITNET) started at City University of New York; Computer Science Network (CSNET) established. INWG establishes TCP/IP as the ARPAnet protocol suite; Department of Defense adopts the standard. Name server developed at University of Wisconsin ; users are no longer required to know the exact path to other systems; splits into ARPAnet and MILnet. Domain Named Server (DNS) introduced; hosts exceed 1,000.

Welcome to the Internet History and Community Memory Project. This is a collaborative project completed by the professor and students in Speech Communication 454, "Communication and Technology," during the Summer of 1997. This page was originally created by the instructor, and will be periodically updated as students add materials over the course of the semester. (Note: the professor has put most of this information together from the course readings, although several selections have been directly pilfered from the Events in the History of Computing website.) Submit Your Entry! sometime around the fourth century Nilus was a fourth century monk who founded a monastery near his hometown (Ancyra, now Ankara, the capital of Turkey). He had a strange and tortured history, for a monk. He was once married, and had a son and a daughter, but in mid-life felt called to a life of spiritual contemplation. In either 390 or 404, he abandoned his wife and daughter and he and his son joined the ascetic congregation of Mount Sinai. His son was kidnapped from the monastery during a raid by Saracen bandits, and Nilus set off to find him. He did, and the two continued their lives of contemplation. Nilus, in descriptions of how he would build the ideal chapel, describes what we can only imagine his monastery was like. Covering the walls of the building would be biblical scenes "painted by the hand of a gifted artist." The pictures, according to Nilus, would "serve as books for the unlearned, teach them scriptural history and impress on them the record of God's mercies."
