Coney Island History Site
Last Updated on August 8, 2000
This interactive educational site covers the history of Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. It features timelines, historic articles and photographs, interactive maps that when clicked on show historic views, and lists of movies filmed on Coney Island's streets, beaches and amusement parks. Coney Island was considered the world's largest and premier amusement area during the first half of the 20th Century. It was a beach resort that provided carefree entertainment and thrilling amusement park rides to the millions of residents that lived in New York City. It featured three huge amusement parks; Luna Park, Steeplechase and Dreamland, and countless other attractions along the Bowery, Surf Avenue and its numerous side streets. The historic articles and photographs for this educational site are based on Jeffrey Stanton's research for a forthcoming history book that would concentrate on Coney Island's amusement park business during the 20th century. While others have written extensively on the area's early history and its social history, they have sadly neglected the amusement park rides and the people who designed them. Book Status: Text nearly complete with 135,000 words in seven chapters. However photos of rides and attractions are sparse and publishers aren't interested in a book with text. May have to self publish.

Guinea's landscape is also greatly varied, ranging from equatorial coastline facing the Atlantic, to savanna in the northeast, to the Guinea Highlands in the south. Mt. Nimba, Guinea's highest mountain rises approximately 1,752 meters (5,748 feet) above sea level. The sources of the Niger, Gambia, and Senegal Rivers are all located in Guinea. Downtown Conakry Photo courtesy of Africa Focus Conakry, the capital city, is situated on Tumbo Island connected to the mainland by a 300-meter pier. There is a strong music tradition in Conakry, as well as the rest of the country, with traditional, modern, and blended styles enjoying widespread popularity. Other major areas of Guinea include the Fouta Djalon plateau and the town of Kankan, the former capital of the Mali Empire. Boussou, a village in the southeast of Guinea, is home to a well-documented chimpanzee population known for its use of stone tools to crack open oil palm tree nuts.

The Application of Internet Map Resources to the Classroom Environment
The objective of this paper is to research and present capabilities available on the Internet for the presentation of maps in the classroom. I used navigation, information, discovery and retrieval (NIDR) tools in the development of this research.
Background
Traditional maps come in many shapes, sizes, and projections. Resources for classroom (K-12) map data have traditionally been bound to paper media. Textbooks and the maps contained therein, expensive large format wall maps, atlases and other map reference data are difficult and expensive to update rapidly. Changing world events continue to exacerbate this problem. Technological solutions provide a range of new choices for manipulating, viewing and analyzing map data. Advances in compact disk read only memory (CD ROM), graphics, computer processing, and software are enabling us to view maps in "softcopy" vice hardcopy. Electronic atlases feature base maps, city maps, elevation maps, and feature data associated with the maps. The focus of this "paper" is the map data available on the Internet. The information highway has become an information enabler. Educators and students are viewing map data in new ways.
What's Available on the Internet
A variety of maps and map-related data is available on the Internet. Authors of this information include government organizations, universities, educators, journals, and commercial industry. A subset of that data has strong application to geography education, at the K-12 level.

Abstract
1 Introduction
Hypertext systems commenced with simple facilities for creating nonlinear texts by embedding within a text links to other texts (McKnight, Dillon and Richardson, 1991). Hypermedia systems are a natural evolution of the linked content notion in which links can be embedded in any presentable item, and connect to any other one (Barrett, 1989). In particular, diagrams become hypermedia objects with the possibility of links from text into diagrams, and from within diagrams to other diagrams, text and general hypermedia objects. Concept maps are a form of diagram specifically targeted to provide visual languages similar in their characteristics to natural language text in that they can be subject to syntactic and semantic constraints, and their representational capacity can range from the fairly informal to the extremely formal. Concept maps have been used in education, policy studies and the philosophy of science to provide a visual representation of knowledge structures and argument forms. They provide a complementary alternative to natural language as a means of communicating knowledge. In many disciplines various forms of concept map are already used as formal knowledge representation systems, for example: semantic networks in artificial intelligence, bond graphs in mechanical and electrical engineering, CPM and PERT charts in operations research, Petri nets in communications, and category graphs in mathematics.
