ANCIENT TIMES
Indonesia did not exist as yet during the Palaeocene period (70 million years BC), the Eocene period (30 million years BC), the Oligacene period (25 million years BC) and the Miocene period (12 million years BC). It is believed that Indonesia must have existed during the Pleistocene period (4 million years BC) when it was linked with the present Asian mainland. It was during this period that the Homonids made their first appearance and Java Man inhabited the part of the world now called Indonesia. Java Man, named Pithecanthropus Erectus by Eugence Dubois who found the fossils on the island of Java, must have been the first inhabitant of Indonesia. When the sea level rose as the result of melting ice north of Europe and the American continent, many islands emerged, including the Indonesian archipelago. It was also during this period (3000-500 BC) that Indonesia was inhabited by Sub-Mongoloid migrants from Asia who later inter-married with the indigenous people. Later still (1000 BC) inter-marriage occurred with Indo-Arian migrants from the south-Asian sub-continent of India. The first Indian migrants came primarily from Gujarat in Southeast India during the first Christian era.

History
The strategic position of Indonesia and its waterways between the Indian and Pacific Oceans has led to fascinating and complex cultural, religious, political and economic history. Evidence of Indonesia's earliest inhabitants include fossils of "Java Man" (Pithecanthropus Erectus), which date back some 500,000 years, discovered near the village of Trinil in East Java by Dr. Eugene Dubois in 1809. Major migration movements to the Indonesian archipelago began about 3000 years ago as the Dongson Culture of Vietnam and southern China spread south, bringing with them new Stone, Bronze and Iron Age cultures as well as the Austronesian language. Their techniques of irrigated rice cultivation are still practiced throughout Indonesia today. Other remnants of this culture such as ritual buffalo sacrifice, erection of stone megaliths and ikat weaving are still visible in isolated areas across the archipelago. Indonesia came under the influence of a mighty Indian civilization through the gradual influx of Indian traders in the first century, A.D., when great Hindu and Buddhist empires were beginning to emerge. By the seventh century, the powerful Buddhist Kingdom of Sriwijaya was on the rise, and it is thought that during this period the spectacular Borobudur Buddhist Temple was built in Central Java. The thirteenth century saw the dominance of the fabulous Majapahit Hindu empire in East Java, which united the whole of modern-day Indonesia and parts of the Malay peninsula, ruling for two centuries. Monuments across Java such as the magnificent Prambanan temple complex near Yogyakarta the mysterious Penataran temple complex in East Java and the ethereal temples of the Dieng Plateau are all that remain of this glorious period in Indonesia's history.

Aspects of the history of Indonesia
Here we refer to aspects of the recent history of Indonesia that we believe more important to the understanding of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. Since the Japanese occupation, which gave birth to the Indonesian military forces that would fight for the independence, through with the presidency of Sukarno and of his substitute after the coup of 1965: Raden Suharto. Both had to deal with accentuated ethno-cultural and social diversity, greatly responsible for regional dissidences. The beginning of Suharto's dictatorship is marked by the rise and omnipresence of the military and the killing of at least 600 000 Communists, while orthodox Moslem groups which had supported the Revolution were again discriminated in matter of concessions.
Introduction to Indonesia
Indonesia is the country with the more of Muslims in the world which means 87 per cent of 180 million habitants. Nevertheless, the major part of the declared Muslims mix their faith in Allah with animistic or Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. These are reminiscences of the Indian colonization that would be interrupted with the penetration of Islam in the 16th century, generally superficial and incomplete. Due to the insular configuration, composed by 13 677 islands, 3 000 inhabited, and with an approximate extension of 1/8 the perimeter of Earth, Indonesia faces problems of national unity. Being the fifth most populous nation, 2/3 are concentrated in only the fifth larger island, Java, where the density is one of the highest. The solution passes inevitably by birth control and transmigration to territories such as Papua New Guinea, recently East Timor but also in between with the evident purpose of dissolving local cultures in the predominant Javanese which is only one amongst 360 tribal and ethno-linguistic groups and more than 250 different languages and dialects.

Indonesia, a Nation in Transition

Although hundreds of ethnic groups have been know as the indigenous of Indonesia for hundreds and thousands of years, Indonesia did not exist in its present form until the turn of the 20th century. Of the so-called natives of Indonesia, archaeologists have speculated that the first people to populate Indonesia migrated from mainland China some 1,000 years ago and inhabited a stretch of islands along the equator, later known as Nusantara. Over the centuries they built and refined their statecraft in the form of kingdoms and principalities. Sharing similar characteristics with other Southeast Asian kingdoms, these Nusantara kingdoms based their conception of state more on people than on space or territory. But intercourse with the western world changed the course of history in Nusantara. In 1511, the Portuguese conquered Malacca, located on the Malay peninsula, which was then still an inseparable part of Nusantara. The Dutch followed in 1512 and landed on Banten shore in Java. At first, the Dutch came more as traders under the trading umbrella of the Royal East Indies Company

Indonesia LAST UPDATE BRIEF HISTORY: Indonesia is the result of several cultural waves: 1° the Hindu wave, since 78 AD when Hindu King Aji Saka settled in Indonesia, 2° the Islam wave, since the 13th century, 3° the European wave, since 1595 (the first Dutch expedition), 1600 (the creation of the English East India Company in Bantam ) and for Timor since 1586 (exploration by Portugal). In 1619, the Dutch obtained the sovereignty of Jakarta renamed by them Batavia. On 17/3/1824, the Treaty of London confirmed the Netherlands in their sovereignty of most of Java. Progressively, throughout the 19th century, the Dutch gained control of most of the surrounding islands. In 1949, Indonesia became independent. On 7/12/1975, Indonesia invaded East Timor and the Portuguese left. Indonesia consists of several islands or parts of islands:
Java : Banten, Cirebon, Gebamg, Giri, Gresik, Mangku Negara, Mataram, Nanggulan, Paku Alaman, Surakarta, Yogyakarta Sumatra Madura : Bangkalan (East Java or Jawa Timur), Purworejo (Middle Java or Jawa Tengah)

Garuda Indonesia claims a more dramatic history than most national carriers by making a note of chronological records. Below are the reviews of our milestone:
  • We start our flight with the DC-3s first flown for Indonesia's struggle against Dutch in the late 1940s.
  • The first flight of the Seulawah (Gold Mountain) in Garuda Indonesian Airways was on January 26, 1949, a date that later was to be recognized as the airline's official birthday. The aircraft had just completed a maintenance inspection in Calcutta and was chartered by the Burmese Government for air transportation services.
  • During the final of the struggle for independence, Seulawah was joined by two other DC3s (RI-007 and 009) for blockade breaking flights to Sumatra in support of the revolution.
  • On March 31, 1950, Garuda Indonesian Airways was officially incorporated. In recognition of the help it had given, the government of Burma was presented with RI-007 as a gift from the people of Indonesia.
  • By the end of 1950, we had 38 aircraft, which include 22 DC3s, eight Catalina seaplanes and eight Convair 240s.

When Funan fell under Khmer rule, the Indochina trade was taken up by other states. The one in the best location was Srivijaya, on the southeastern coast of Sumatra near both the Malacca and Sunda straits. It was probably in existence as a kingdom before the collapse of Funan, but the first record that mentions Srivijaya is the travel diary of I-ching, a Chinese Buddhist pilgrim who visited in 671 and praised its capital, Palembang, for its 1,000 monks and an excellent library of holy texts. One hundred years later Srivijaya not only ruled Sumatra but also the Malay peninsula and western Java, giving it almost complete control over the Indochina trade. And with the growth of powerful new states eager to trade with one another (the Tang dynasty of China and the Islamic caliphates of the Middle East), Srivijaya could look forward to a prosperous future.
Srivijaya never forgot that its prosperity came from abroad. The Srivijayans kept the Chinese friendly with diplomacy, sending merchants to the Chinese court in the guise of vassals offering tribute. To supplement their income as middlemen, local industries were developed in pepper, nipa mats, tortoiseshell, beeswax, aromatic woods, and camphor. The

The "Malays" from southern China and Indochina later began populating the archipelago around 3000BC. Indonesia is very much influenced by the cultures it encountered throughout its history. Powerful groups such as the Buddhist Srivijaya empire and the Hindu Mataram kingdom had arisen in Java and Sumatra towards the end of the 7th century. The last great Hindu kingdom was the Majapahit, which was founded in the 13th century. The subsequent spread of Islam into the archipelago in the 14th century forced the Majapahit's to retreat to Bali, which is one of the few islands which remained Hindu and preserved to this day. By the 15th century, a strong Muslim empire had developed and most people in Indonesia today practice Islam.

    Political History of Aceh
    Political Violence in Indonesia
At first glance, the reasons behind the Acehnese struggle for independence and their assertion of refugee status are not self-evident. Aceh is, after all, overwhelmingly Muslim, like the rest of Indonesia, and the Acehnese make no claim to a distinct ethnicity or, necessarily, political ideology. A brief exploration of Aceh's history, however, explains the mix of factors that led Aceh into a "war of national liberation" and turned thousands of its people into exiles. According to some historians, Islam first entered the Indonesian archipelago, and possibly all of Southeast Asia, through Aceh sometime around the year 700. The first Islamic kingdom, Perlak (a prosperous trading port in what is now Aceh), was established in the year 804. Much later, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the port of Aceh became entangled, along with the rest of what is now Indonesia, in the European colonial powers' competition for worldwide political and economic dominance Interested parties included the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and British. Paul Wolfowitz, Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and former U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, says that for many centuries Aceh was a very distinct and influential political entity. "The Sultan of Aceh," he says, "along with the Sultan of Malacca, was a major controller of trade through the straits."
