Why Search Other Libraries? Search other state/local libraries' catalogs to see what is available, especially if you're willing to travel to another library. ISU personnel can use their Sycamore IDs to check out materials at most Indiana libraries. Materials checked out at other libraries by ISU personnel may be returned to the ISU Interlibrary Loan Office and we will return the books (some restrictions do apply; check with Interlibrary Loan first!). Search other libraries to ascertain complete lists of works by authors, etc. It is, however, not necessary to search catalogs of other libraries before submitting Interlibrary Loan Requests. [ISU-affiliated library users only!; others must use their college's service or public library]

Porter County Public Library System Valparaiso, Portage, South Haven, Kouts, Hebron Libraries Ranked in the top 100 libraries Ranked 5th in population served
The eagerly awaited if overdue measure of the nation’s public libraries is here. The Porter County Public Library System (PCPLS) and nine other Indiana libraries continue to be ranked in the top 100 libraries in the Hennen’s American Public Library Index. Among the 50 states, Indiana continues to be ranked second behind Ohio. The PCPLS is among 10 Indiana libraries ranked in the top 100 for their size in the rating index. This fourth edition of HAPLR Ratings is based on 2000 data from the Federal-State Cooperative Service (FSCS) as published on the World Wide Web in July 2002. The federal agency compiles the data reported annually by state library agencies for nearly 9,000 libraries into a single dataset. This information was released in the October, 2002 issue of American Libraries magazine. This year, the Porter County Library System ranked 5th among libraries that serve a population from 100,000 to 249,999 . Only Naperville, IL; St. Charles City-County, MO; Medina County, OH; and St. Joseph County, IN outranked PCPLS. The Porter County Public Library System serves its population through 5 branch libraries: Valparaiso, Portage, South Haven, Hebron, and Kouts Public Libraries.

49. History Of Indiana, Governors & Leaders Indiana Libraries And Lottery
Indiana Territory Beginnings. Supplementary Matter. indiana librariesand Lottery. From a paper prepared by Doctor Horace Ellis
http://www.countyhistory.com/history/083.htm
Indiana Territory Beginnings Supplementary Matter Indiana Libraries and Lottery "In 1815, the Vincennes Library Company, emulating the Vincennes University, arranged a lottery, when books and clocks were offered as prizes. The progress of this affords interesting reading, as human nature is the same whether concerned with affairs in early Vincennes or present day Indianapolis. When Vincennes University was incorporated on November 29, 1806, the Territorial Legislature vested authority in the trustees of the university by means of which they might raise funds not to exceed $20,000. The trustees claimed this as vested right as late as 1883, when the United States Supreme Court rendered a decision that there could be no vested right in a lottery. Citizens of Indiana prior to this decision, bought tickets and took chances as freely as did others in the famous Louisiana lottery." Merica Hoagland.

AWARD WINNERS 2001 Public Library Friends, Large Budget Friends of the Jefferson Public Library, Metairie, Louisiana Encouraging reading and literacy are important goals of the Friends of the Jefferson Library. Their "Raise a Reader" program is a partnership venture in which the Friends, the library, and a local education association contribute to packets for new parents 1,838 were distributed last year. The Friends also donate books to public schools, provide gift certificates for the library's summer reading program, sponsor cultural programs, and make quality reading material readily available at their book sales. Innovative book sale publicity and book collection strategies helped them increase their income this year, and special events for staff members led to increased cooperation between Friends and staff. Public Library Friends, Medium Budget Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library, Thousand Oaks, California "Bookmaking - Evolution from Stone to Paper" was a Saturday program for all ages that offered the opportunity to observe masters of such skills as embossing, gold-leaf, hand-casting of 15th century type, binding, making paper and ink, and cutting letters in stone. More than 100 participants donated their time and skills, and an estimated 4,000 people attended. Hands-on activities for children added to the fun. Actors portraying figures from history read and told stories. The event was described by the director of the California Center for the Book as "smashing, spectacular, tremendously educational, and just pure fun."
