Wordstruck
Wordstruck was a multiagency collaborative project which sponsored visits by Indiana children's authors and illustrators to schools and public libraries. Wordstruck was coordinated by the Friends of Indiana Libraries and funded by: Additional partners in Wordstruck included: Logo art courtesy of Claire Ewart. To make an impact, a child's encounter with an author must be well planned and substantive. The following is a guide intended as a source of ideas for the visiting author or illustrator, and for the host school or library, so that all can work together to make each visit an effective educational experience that leaves students excited about reading, writing, and creating. There are as many ways to conduct an author/illustrator visit as there are schools and libraries. Above all, hosts and presenters need to work with the same goals in mind, whether it's simply arousing a love of books or establishing a writer's identity in children.

Five Indiana Libraries Continuing National Trend Choose Library.Solution™
Support, functionality named as major benefits of Library.Solution INWOOD, WV, January 24, 2003 -Five public libraries in Indiana have recently chosen Library .Solution , The Library Corporation's (TLC's) integrated automation system, continuing the trend of libraries throughout the United States in choosing TLC. Aurora Public Library will use Library.Solution at two sites, with patrons accessing the new Library.Solution catalog via 30 network stations. Library.Solution is Aurora's first automation system. Aurora Director Mary Alice Horton said that an important factor in the decision to purchase Library.Solution was the praise that TLC receives from current customers: "Response from people who are customers is one of the biggest reasons that swayed the balance (toward TLC). If a library is with TLC, they stay," she said. Ms. Horton also added that TLC was the only vendor that provided her with a full client list during the selection process. Aurora staff, all of who were closely involved in the automation system selection process, also liked Library.Solution's ease of use and overall look. "It's so easy to understand what you need to do," Ms. Horton observed. "We liked the general overall look, the ease of access in getting into the product…especially for the staff person, who really has to deal with the system. We looked very hard at the Circulation module, the one that every staff person will have to look at everyday," she said.

Indiana Libraries Continue to Choose TLC for Automation
INWOOD, WV, May 16, 2002 - The Library Corporation's (TLC's) integrated library system Library .Solution has become an increasingly popular choice for libraries in Indiana. One Indiana library that recently chose TLC is Eckhart Public Library in Auburn. Eckhart chose Library.Solution to replace its Gaylord Galaxy system. "We wanted to upgrade our automation system to a Windows-based environment," said Eckhart Operations Manager Chris Grogg. "Last year we installed a state-of-the-art materials security system and therefore wanted an automation system to be technologically advanced as well," she said. Eckhart's automation committee, comprised of 12 different members representing each department, selected the library's new system. "We first began by inviting vendors for a preliminary presentation. The committee then followed this up with an on-site visit of a TLC library in our county - Garrett Public Library. After receiving RFP's from four vendors, we narrowed our choice to TLC and Gaylord's Polaris. Both vendors were invited back for a second presentation. We decided to conduct a thorough survey of current TLC and Polaris users. The information we obtained was invaluable - it really made the automation committee's decision much easier. The committee assigned points to criteria we deemed most important to come up with a unanimous decision - TLC." Ms. Grogg said that Library.Solution features that impressed the committee included its cataloging and report-writer modules. Other strong features included ease of system administration and use: "We consistently heard the remark 'TLC is easy to use' by our survey respondents," she said. Additional strengths that attracted the committee included: the library system administrator's ability to have control in the system; and a non-mouse dependent circulation system, according to Ms. Grogg.

IU and Gates Foundation bring computers to Indiana libraries
Poorest communities to benefit
BLOOMINGTON Six graduate students in Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) are helping bring computer access to 185 public libraries in some of Indiana's poorest communities. As interns with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's U.S. Library Program, the students are spending about 20 hours per week installing computers, purchased with funds provided by the Gates Foundation, in libraries throughout the state. In addition to installing the computers and accompanying software, the students are training the local librarians in the use of the new equipment. IU was chosen to partner with the Gates Foundation in this project because it is home to the state's only graduate library program that is accredited by the American Library Association. Last April, Amy Carter, a representative of the Gates Foundation, visited Bloomington to present the ambitious plan that will conclude in spring 2002, and to search for six students. After 25 candidates were interviewed, six SLIS graduate students were chosen to participate in the program. In exchange for their service, the students receive academic credit and the Gates Foundation pays their tuition.
