Many Migwetches to Jonathan, who prefers that his last name not be used. This person, who is of Grand Portage Ojibwe heritage, had lost touch with his ancestral origins. He found some relevant info on this site, about Grand Portage and other Minnesota Ojibwe tribes and history that helped him and his kids get in touch with their Indian roots. He saw the problems I'd been having since the fire with hardware to replace not covered by insurance. So this man donated a 32 meg SIMM!!!! (computer memory). T hat's a really helpful kind of giveaway, an Indian tradition. As an individual, I cannot receive any funding. So I support this site (and the book reviews site) as best I can personally. Usually the only real heavy expense is phone. But losing a lot of equipment and software that has to be replaced is very hard. Help like this is really appreciated. It is so unusual I hardly know what to say except migwetch in every language, of which "Pidamaya!" "Thank-you!", "Merci beaucoup!" and "Dankeshoen" exhausts my linguistic knowledge. I was very happy to learn that materials gathered here either created locally or linked-to can help people to learn about their lost tribal heritage, and to find tribal contacts. Often I wonder if it is really of any use to anybody.

Guide to Hopi Kachinas
L to R: Owl Kachina, Sun Kachina and Butterfly Maiden Following is an explanation of Hopi Kachinas that appear on our pages, and how they fit in the Hopi life and religion. The "dolls" representing these kachinas are carvings originally used as a teaching aid, but more recently as a Hopi art form. Information for this section has been taken, by permission, from a book by our friend, Barton Wright— Hopi Kachinas, The Complete Guide to Collecting Kachina Dolls. These carved and painted figures are called a tihu by the Hopi, and a kachina doll by others. They are not dolls, playthings for the children, but effigies or small parts of the the kachinas they represent. Each one bears a portion of the individual kachina spirit's power, just as a child bears resemblance to its parents. Traditionally, Hopi have used dried cottonwood roots as the base material for their carving. After trying many substitutes, the cottonwood root remains the best material for the carvers, and is used exclusively in the kachinas we present to our customers. Formerly, appropriate feathers were often used to decorate the kachina dolls; however, since the government ban on feathers of endangered species, the carvers have adapted to using carvings to represent feathers. As a comment, this change has actually improved the dolls, from an esthetic and artistic viewpoint.

Mother Goddess as Kali - The Feminine Force in Indian Art
Article of the Month - August 2000
The worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has prehistoric roots, but the transformation of that deity into a Great goddess of cosmic powers was achieved with the composition of the Devi Mahatmya (Glory of the goddess), a text of the fifth to sixth century, when worship of the female principle took on dramatic new dimensions. The goddess is not only the mysterious source of life, she is the very soil, all-creating and all consuming. Kali makes her 'official' debut in the Devi-Mahatmya, where she is said to have emanated from the brow of Goddess Durga (slayer of demons) during one of the battles between the divine and anti-divine forces. Etymologically Durga's name means "Beyond Reach". She is thus an echo of the woman warrior's fierce virginal autonomy. In this context Kali is considered the 'forceful' form of the great goddess Durga.
