Ancestors of the Incas, which has never been exhibited before, includes more than 250 objects made by all of the major ancient cultures of the Central Andes region including the Chavin, Nazca, Moche, Chimu, Huari and Inca. Although these cultures never developed a formal written language, much of their history, myths and legends were passed down through significant art forms. These pieces date from 1400 BC-AD1530 and include striking ceramic portraits of Moche rulers, gold and silver royal vessels, rare and delicate inlaid wooden boxes, textiles and jewelry of turquoise, mother of pearl and shell. The exhibition also showcases 17 recent donations from Dr. and Mrs. Solomon D. Klotz to the OMA's permanent collection of Art of the Ancient Americas.

Ancient History Project

http://www.xs4all.nl/~swanson/origins/eg_history_intro.html

GRADE LEVEL: 4-8 CONTENT: This Web site has information on history and cultures from the ancient Egyptians to the North American Indians. AESTHETICS: The site uses large text and wide spacing. which makes the text easy to read. Graphics are used sparingly but decorate the site's main pages. Some of the projects are image-based. ORGANIZATION: It can take some time to become familiar with the structure of the site. A recently added site map helps. The navigation menu links at the top of each section are mostly jumps to other sections of the page but also link to the main menu which then leads back to the home page. REVIEW: This information at this site comes from two years of projects completed by sixth-grade students at the The International School of Amsterdam. The first year was devoted to various aspects of ancient Egypt and the following year students covered the Romans, Greeks, Celts, Vikings, Incas, Aztecs, Chinese, Etruscans, Maoris, and North American Indians. The site also includes projects on the same topics from other schools. This is a great source of information for students or teachers studying ancient civilizations and a good example for teachers contemplating a class project on the Web.

Washington Post Foreign Service NAZCA, Peru Emerging like a mirage in Peru's coastal desert, the massive figures of a hummingbird, monkey, lizard and other shapes carved into a rocky plain
have baffled archaeologists for decades, surrendering only the faintest clues about their ancient purpose. But the enigmatic Nazca Lines now appear to be sending one signal loud and clear: SOS. After years in which the Lines suffered gradual destruction, a new tide of tomb raiders seeking pre-Inca artifacts is scarring the terrain with hundreds of burrows amid
the figures here, and near even older shapes around the neighboring town of Palpa. A boom in copper and gold mining including a mine built four years ago a few
feet from a 2,000-year-old, two-mile-long trapezoid is defacing parts of the Lines with tracks from truck traffic. Over the past decade, advertisers and political campaigns have carved huge messages in the rock and sand between the ancient designs in this region 250 miles south
of Lima. In 1998, floods and mudslides from the El Nino weather pattern seriously eroded several figures. And as electricity reaches the growing local population

Many cultures spoke of massaging the back or even back walking, a practice of laying a patient or family member on there belly and slowly walking bare foot up and down there back. American Indians used to have small children walk on the backs of the sick. There are even records of the South American Incas using manipulation as a form of healing. This respect for the stone and its inner powers gave rise to their expert masonry. They used stones of unusual size and fitted them together without mortar to form walls; one could not insert a sheet of paper between these stones they were so carefully crafted together. The surfaces were smoothly carved and were not squared off to make them look almost alive. This detailed masonry can be seen in Machu Picchu, "the lost city of the Incas." The ancient city sits on top of a mountain 8,000 feet in elevation, virtually untouched since inhabited by the Incas. Because of its elevation and location, the Spanish conquistadors missed Machu Picchu and it turned into a refuge for the escaping Inca during the time of conquest. Amazingly preserved temples still stand with huge walls of artistically carved white granite that demonstrate an obvious expertise. Machu Picchu may be the best preserved and most beautiful example of masonry the Inca Empire had to offer. Although the Incan Empire was large and advanced, it flourished for only a short time. Starting around 1450 A.D., it lasted roughly a century. In 1532, Francisco Pizarro and his men arrived from Panama during a time of civil unrest for the Inca. Huayna Capac, the ruler of the time, had died and left his kingdom to one of his sons Huascar. Enraged, Atahualpa, Capac's other son, defeated and murdered his brother. Taking advantage of the weakness of a culture in civil war, Pizarro attacked and killed Atahualpa, signifying the end of the Inca Empire, then melted down all of his gold.
