Director : Pierre-André CAZENAVE ( cazenave@pasteur.fr
The scientific activities of the Infectious Immunophysiopathology Unit are centered on the study of mechanisms controlling the physiology of the host immune system and those leading to immunopathologies following parasitic infections and diseases, namely Chagas' disease and Malaria. These studies are particularly grounded on more fundamental research on immune repertoires.
We pursued the molecular, biochemical and functional analyses of the first eukaryotic proline racemase, TcPRAC (TcPA45), protein released by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, responsible for Chagas' disease. TcPRAC is a T-cell independent B-cell mitogen, largely implicated in polyclonal lymphocyte activation and consequently in the mechanisms of parasite evasion and persistence inside the host. We showed that TcPRAC mitogenic activity is dependent on the integrity of the enzyme active site. Furthermore, the parasite proline racemase was shown to be important to the parasite differentiation from non-infective to infective forms, as well as to parasite virulence to host cells. We defined a protein signature capable of identify putative proline racemases of several microorganisms of medical and agricultural importance. In collaboration with the Structural Biochemistry Unit we recently obtained the crystallographic structure of TcPRAC. Ongoing studies aim at designing enzyme inhibitors to be used in therapeutic approaches. Web site : http://www.pasteur.fr/recherche/unites/tcruzi/minoprio/minoprio.html

By combining technologies, the two companies hope to create an Armed Therapeutic Virus capable of treating the disease both at the tumor site and systemically. The resulting therapeutic will have the potential to be extremely specific, while at the same time allowing treatment of cancer throughout the body after systemic administration of the virus. MEDAREX, INC.
In June 2000, we announced a collaboration with Medarex, Inc. to develop fully human antibody therapeutics for certain G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a class of cell surface receptors widely regarded as an important source of novel drug targets for a number of serious diseases. The two companies will work exclusively on fully human antibody products that are jointly developed by the collaboration and will share costs and commercialization rights to such products.
Cells routinely communicate with one another in order to carry out normal physiological functions. When this intercellular communication goes awry, a number of different disease states can occur. GPCRs, which transmit these signals across cell membranes, have been implicated in a number of diseases. In fact, many therapeutics used today act by influencing GPCR signaling pathways. Since a number of GPCRs have yet to be identified, a significant amount of drug discovery research is focused on increasing the understanding of these important proteins.

Into the integration jungle

WHEN TWO OF the financial industry's largest players decide to join forces, integrating the technology and operations platforms isn't exactly a project that can be put on hold until economic forecasts perk up.
"This was a project that had to get done, regardless of the current economic climate," explains Rick Mangogna, CIO of J.P. Morgan Chase's Investment Bank.
As soon as the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan was announced, work began to set up the project management structure and evaluate technology inventories, even before the merger closed in January 2001, says Martha Gallo, head of J.P. Morgan Chase's Operating Risk Management group and Lab Morgan. The sheer amount of information flowing through and depending on the merged financial stalwarts' technology meant the integration project had to be thorough, comprehensive, and quick.
Gallo and Mangogna are co-heads of J.P. Morgan Chase's technology and operations steering committee, which oversees all technology and operations aspects of the merger. The ultimate goal is to offer all J.P. Morgan Chase clients comprehensive, integrated financial services from the same platform presenting one firm not only in name but in practice.

Partnerships 98 : Partnerships
Introduction PARTNERSHIPS occur when two or more parties enter into an agreement to combine their expertise, property and/or labour to work together towards the achievement of common goals, while sharing both profits and losses and mutually accepting associated risks What was once perceived as a trend is now considered the norm. As a result of widespread economic, social and technological changes, partnering is, today, the way to do business. This collaborative approach has proliferated throughout the business community, educational community and society as a whole. Spanning all sectors, partnering has taken on global dimensions. Partnerships exist within sectors, across sectors, within provinces/territories, between provinces/territories and on the international front. With partnerships at the forefront of how societies now operate, partnerships are becoming increasingly more studied, and in some cases, regulated. Many governments have stepped in to enact legislation specifically dealing with issues around partnering. In the specific area of educational partnering, the United States, for example, has seen Congress establish the Educational Partnerships Act in 1988 (Title VI, Subtitle A, Chapter 5 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, Public Law; 100-418). Additionally, the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) of the U.S. Department of Education joined efforts to encourage educational partnerships. From 1989 to 1994, OERI provided funding to educational partnerships that had a variety of educational improvement goals in public elementary and secondary schools. OERI also funded the Southwest Regional Laboratory (SWRL) and the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) to document and evaluate the Educational Partnerships Program (EPP). The goal was to determine the impact of the funded partnerships, both on educational organizations and the community, and to find the processes and structures associated with positive impacts. (

Preparing for a denial strike
By P.J. Connolly, InfoWorld Test Center

The high price of manageability
Web-based management has been touted over the last few years as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Because all management data is presented in a well-understood format, shops have to deploy fewer management tools, users face a shallower learning curve, and even the starkest browser-based interfaces present data more effectively than a Telnet session.
But one hardware vendor is learning the hard way that adding Web services to hardware can leave customers vulnerable.
Cisco, one of the largest manufacturers of networking hardware devices, provided its customers with a nasty surprise in mid-May when the company confirmed the existence of a defect in multiple releases of Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS), the core software component of much of the company's product line. The defect (a description is available online at www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/ioshttpserver-pub.shtml) can cause a switch or router to halt or reload, thus interrupting service.
According to documentation provided at Cisco's Web site, the defect "affects virtually all mainstream Cisco routers and switches running Cisco IOS software releases 11.1 through 12.1, inclusive." (That should get your attention.) Fortunately, as of mid-May Cisco had received no reports that the defect, first posted to the Bugtraq mailing list on April 27, had been maliciously exploited.
