Illinois Genealogy
The first white settlement in Illinois was a French mission at Cahokia, in 1699. In 1763, Great Britain received the area from France as a result of the French-Indian War. In 1778, the Americans captured Kaskaskia, where the British governing power lay, and Connecticut, Virginia and Massachusetts all laid claim to Illinois. In 1787, Illinois was made part of the Northwest Territory, and remained so until 1800 when it was split off as part of Indiana Territory. It became its Illinois Territory in 1809, and became a state in 1818. There was still friction between the white settlers and the Native Americans, and the Blackhawk War of 1832 drove most of the remaining Indians from the state. Immigration continuously increased with the extension of The National Road into the state, and the railroad brought in even more settlers. Illinois remained in the Union during the Civil War, and sent nearly a quarter million soldiers into that conflict.

ILGenWeb The ILGenWeb Project is the state's largest family of free genealogy sites. Besides the main Illinois site, additional sites exist for each county. These web sites should be your first stop when searching for your ancestors once you know where they lived.
The project is part of the larger USGenWeb Project. Illinois Trails Illinois Trails is another volunteer group of sites similar to ILGenWeb although it hasn't been around nearly as long. Mail Lists Rootsweb sponsors Mail Lists for nearly every U.S. county and a vast majority of surnames. To subscribe, simply click on the link and it will open an e-mail letter to the list. Down in the body of the message simply type "SUBSCRIBE" (without the quotes) then click to send it. Don't worry about putting anything in the Subject line.
Also, turn off any signatures before you send it. The servers add you automatically so if there is anything other than "SUBSCRIBE" then you confuse the program. Once added you will receive a set of instructions back in e-mail. GenForum GenForum is one of the older free commercial websites for genealogy. The links on this page go to message forum boards for each county. The site is better known for its surname message boards.

FEDERAL LAND SERIES Consists of a five-part Federal Land Series by noted genealogist, Clifford Neal Smith. Originally published by the American Library Association between 1972 and 1986, these four books (Volume 4 was originally published in two parts) list the public land grants made by the federal government and the State of Virginia to settlers in the US territories between 1788 and 1835. These books provide genealogists with important tools for tracing the westward movement of families in the largely undocumented migration into the Old Northwest Territory. THE SET (Vol. I-IV), 6 x 9, includes 1,7772 pp. in all, maps, index, paperbound. (1982, 1973, 1980, 1982, 1986), repr. 1999. Set: $210.00 Volume I: 1788-1810. Vol. II: 1799-1835. REVOLUTIONARY WAR BOUNTY-LAND WARRANTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. This volume furnishes evidence of Revolutionary War military service inasmuch as it indexes all names appearing in the summary registers of the General Land Office poertaining to grants of land in the US Military District of Ohio for 1799-1835. It also includes lists of some of the bounty-land warrants exchanged for script. The tracts located in the calendar are shown in a map included in the volume Contains an index of 10,000 names and a separate index to the tracts in the Military District. Vol. III: 1810-1814.
