After studying a variety of birds and their features, the students selected one bird to study in depth. They had four attributes that they were required to find out about. These were:
  • where the bird lives what the bird eats type of feet type of beak
This information was then presented as a "What Am I?" poster on a Word template (Word doc, 19k). Included on this poster was a title, four bulleted clues, and a picture of their bird hidden by a lift up flap. These posters provided a class activity. Students were encouraged to read the clues that were written by others in the class and guess the bird they had chosen. They could then lift the flap and see if they were correct.

Identifying Political Birds
Chortler.com outlines a few of the various types of birds found in today's political landscape:
The Blair Parrot Location: United Kingdom. The Blair Parrot distinguishes itself from all other birds in that has no use for its left wing. (It constantly steers itself with its right wing, though giving the appearance of using its left.) What makes this bird even more special is that it does exactly as it is told, provided it is spoken to with an American accent.
The Cheney Ostrich - Little is known about the exact whereabouts of this reclusive bird. However, it does make an appearance about once every six months to a year as if to say to the public at large: “I am still here.” It lives exclusively on a diet of Middle East oil.
The Gore Dove - This bird can be found just about everywhere a person decides to look these days. Though it can exist quietly in the shadows for years at a time, it can also just as easily shed its feathers and paint itself in a completely different stripe.

More to birding than just identifying By Dr. SCOTT SHALAWAY
Columnist Identifying all the birds at backyard feeders can seem an impossible task to beginners. Depending on your motivation, it may take days, weeks, or even months to master the 20-plus species that visit winter feeding stations. But after learning to recognize the most common feeder birds, you can graduate to more serious, and arguably more interesting, birdwatching. Watching feeder birds raises many interesting questions. What are they doing? Is there a "pecking order" among the species of birds that visit feeders? How do feeder birds react to squirrels, cats, and hawks? Does the weather affect the number of birds that use feeders? These questions and many more can be answered by anyone who feeds and watches birds. No special training or education is necessary. Patience and experience are expert instructors. A few years ago, for example, I took a closer look at how birds eat sunflower seeds. Although I offer a variety of food sunflower seeds, nuts, millet, corn, and suet oil sunflower seeds are eaten by the greatest variety of birds. The question on my mind was, "Do birds just gulp down their food, or do different birds eat in different ways?"

Identifying Unusual Bands
Most of the bands found on birds other than federal metal bands and auxiliary markers (includes goose neck bands and colored leg bands) should not be reported to the Bird Banding Laboratory. The exception are bands from foreign banding schemes. Federal and other bands are listed here with a general indication of where they can be reported.
Federal Bands
Federal bands issued in the USA and Canada have 8 or 9 numbers with a legend indicating WRITE BIRD BAND LAUREL MD 20708 or AVISE BIRD BAND WASH DC. Avise loosely means advise in several languages. Some bands used in recent years may have the 1-800-327-BAND legend as well, especially larger bands. These bands are always metal but may be aluminum or harder metal. Color bands are used as auxiliary markers by some banders with the permission of the respective banding office. Some specialty bands have a letter followed by 5 numbers. These bands are federal bands of special types, either triangular bands used on murres or tiny bands used on hummingbirds. These bands should be reported to the Bird Banding Laboratory. More information on Auxiliary Markers used on Birds
Foreign Bands
Many foreign countries also have bird banding programs. Foreign countries often use letters as well as numbers in their bands. The bands all have a foreign address on them. Bands from other governments found in North America should be reported to the US Bird Banding Laboratory at 1-800-327-BAND. Be sure to state that the band has the address of a foreign banding scheme, and give the address or name of the scheme as it appears on the band! Each year, bands from Russia and Japan are found in western North America. Banded Peregrine Falcons and

Feed the Birds
Beginning with the basics, rest assured there is no right or wrong way to feed wild birds. All it takes is a little seed in the palm of your hand, and your in the business of feeding chickadees. For most other birds however, its your choice of a wide variety of seeds and an endless selection of bird feeders, strategically placed to maximize your view Type of Bird Food: Here are the basic types of bird seeds and bird foods. Seeds and their value to Birds Sunflower High in protein and fats Black Sunflower High in oil. Sunflower Kernel High in energy Cracked Corn carbohydrates, grit to grind seeds. Safflower High in oils, but only specific birds will eat it. Peanut Kernels High in fat and calories Thistle (Nyger) High in oil. Yellow Millet Vitamins, and protein Note: Of all the seeds you can get, squirrels like them all too, except Safflower. Too bad few birds eat Safflower. http://www.cvm.okstate.edu/instruction/kocan/ostrich/ostbk2d3.htm
IDENTIFICATION AND MICROCHIPPING There are numerous options available to producers for identifying ostrich. The most common method of identifying young birds is by the use of plastic numbered leg bands. These bands can be placed on the birds at hatching and will be useful for several weeks. Larger bands are available for juvenile and adult birds that can be adjusted to the size of the lag as the birds grow. Many producers use microchip identification as a method of identifying birds. Birds can be microchipped at hatching by implanting the small chip under the skin (often placed in the pipping muscle of the neck at this time). This method is useful in both identifying birds on the ranch and also for locating and identifying lost or stolen birds. Many insurance companies require microchip identification. Microchip birds at one month of age. Locations for implanting the microchip include the hip muscle, the muscle on the back just above the tail and the area between the wings. Several companies produce both microchips and readers. Unfortunately, different products are not totally compatible. Consequently, different readers are required for different chips. The following is a listing of companies that produce this equipment. Avid 155 Woodside Drive Mandeville, La. 70448 504-626-4167

http://www.birdwatching.com/bookstore/sibley_fieldguide_review.html
The Sibley
Guide to Birds
It's a sensual pleasure to read this large-paged, lavishly illustrated soft-cover book. Each page is beautiful. Author and artist David Sibley has created 6600 illustrations, by far the most in any modern field guide to North American birds. Each bird appears in several poses, an average of eight pictures per bird. Why so many? To show all the different ways a bird appears, which may vary depending on its gender and age, on the season, and on the area of the country where it's found. Most pages show two species, but many birds, such as Red-tailed Hawk and White-breasted Nuthatch, get a whole page to themselves.
David Sibley has done something wonderful here, for while all his pictures are rich in information, each one is also a work of art. Each account includes a good-sized map of where the bird is found in all seasons and a detailed description of its songs and calls. And while most field guides show birds only in profile, this book shows, in addition, many birds perched nearly head-on to the viewer, especially sparrows and other small birds that we often see from that position.
