If you are planning to move to another state, you should contact that state's certification office, as listed below. The number code following each entry indicates the types of testing which the state required at the time this information was published in the 1999 Job Search Hanbook. The key to the codes follows the state listing.
When you write or call the state certification office, indicate the type of certificate you are receiving from your current state, which national tests you have taken, and ask for application materials and procedures for obtaining certification in the new state. Another source of information about certification requirements will be the actual districts to which you apply.

    APPLYING FOR IDAHO TEACHER CERTIFICATION If you wish to be certificate in the State of Idaho or any other state, you must apply. You should apply for certification at the time you are eligible because requirements change from year to year. If you do not plan to teach immediately, we strongly recommend that you still apply for your credential. We do NOT suggest that you wait until you start to teach before you complete the certification process. Some school districts will hold your paycheck until proof of certification is received. When you have completed your Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and have met all Teacher Education requirements, the Dean of the College of Education will recommend to the State Department of Education that you be issued a teaching certificate. Application is made in the Office of the Dean (E-704 / 426-1134). You need to complete three forms (available in the Office of the Dean, College of Education). You should complete your paperwork for certification at least one month in advance of graduation or completion of the certification program "Student Request for Idaho Teacher Certification Recommendation"

Application should be made by the end of the first semester of the junior year or when applying for the Professional Year. You will receive a graduation evaluation from the registrar prior to student teaching. See your advisor for questions concerning the graduation evaluation.     I. FINDING AN EDUCATION JOB IN IDAHO Each Idaho school district advertises its own vacancies and maintains its own employment procedures. District vacancies are often listed with college or university placement centers or with the Idaho Department of Employment. Questions about openings and salaries should be addressed to school districts. IDAHO TEACHER PLACEMENT CENTERS II. BECOMING CERTIFIED IN IDAHO All applicants for Idaho professional education credentials must:
  • be at least eighteen years old;
  • have completed specific minimum requirements of college training, depending on the credential to be held; and
  • meet standards in effect at the time of application. RECENT CREDIT REQUIREMENT (NON-EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT) An initial Idaho credential can be held only if applicants have completed six semester credit hours (or nine quarter hours) in the last five calendar years. Official transcripts verifying the credit must be provided with the application. Coursework may be in any area and at any level except remedial courses. INTERSTATE CERTIFICATION COMPACT If applicants have completed a teacher training program in the following states within the last five calendar years or have taught three of the last seven years in one of these states, provisions of the Interstate Certification Compact (ICC) may apply. The ICC covers only elementary and secondary classroom teachers. The Idaho requirement of recent credit must have been completed for the ICC terms to be in effect in Idaho. Idaho educators may expect reciprocity in any of the states listed below, provided any non-educational requirements of the other state(s) have been met.
