Collaboration Key to Citing Hydrogen Energy Station
December 2002 Issue
by Karen Miller , Vice President of the National Hydrogen Association On November 15, 2002, the City of Las Vegas, NV dedicated a hydrogen/electricity co-production station. The $10.8 million, five year hydrogen energy demonstration project includes research, development of the new technology and the manufacturing and installation of equipment at the energy station. The project is a public-private partnership between DOE , the City of Las Vegas, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. , and Plug Power . Key subcomponent manufacturers included Harvest Energy Technologies , providing a fuel processor and the cooperative assembly of the generator; and QuestAir Technologies , providing hydrogen purification equipment. The fuel cell is a 50 kW PEM fuel cell, with 480 VAC, grid parallel electrical output. This provides enough electricity on a daily basis to power about thirty Las Vegas homes. Air Product's hydrogen generator (left) at the Las Vegas Energy Station produces hydrogen through the reforming and purification of natural gas. This hydrogen fuels vehicles, and Plug Power's PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cell (left), which provides electrical energy to the Las Vegas grid. (Courtesy: Air Products

Tomorrow's generation of automobiles and trucks will have to be cleaner and much more efficient if the United States is to strengthen its energy security and continue to improve its environment. Beginning in fiscal 2003, the U.S. Department of Energy's Fossil Energy program will shift its clean fuels research program from ultra-clean forms of petroleum-based fuels to a new research effort focused on lower cost ways to produce hydrogen from coal and natural gas - a key element of President Bush's new Hydrogen Fuel Initiative.

Advanced Coal to Hydrogen Processes
Partial oxidation of coal is a promising technology for the production of electric power and hydrogen that uses integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) technology. There currently are no commercial demonstrations of these joint power and hydrogen plants, however. Partial oxidation, or gasification, combines coal, oxygen and steam to produce synthesis gas that is cleaned of impurities such as sulfur or mercury.
Read more about DOE's coal gasification research program.

To produce hydrogen, this synthesis gas is further processed using mature water-gas shift reactor technology to increase hydrogen and convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Hydrogen is then separated using PSA technology. Hydrogen production from coal-derived synthesis gas essentially uses the same gasification process steps currently being developed in DOE's coal-based clean electric power generation program.
Read more about DOE's carbon sequestration program

To reduce costs, novel and advanced technology must be developed in all phases of the gasification through hydrogen separation phases. Carbon dioxide produced in the hydrogen production process would be removed utilizing capture and storage technology now being developed in DOE's carbon sequestration research program.

More . DOE National hydrogen energy Roadmap Energy Secretary Spencer Abrahamhas announced the release of the National hydrogen energy Roadmap!
http://www.hydrogenus.com/industry-insider.asp
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 30, 2003 —The National Hydrogen Association commends President Bush’s commitment to the research and development of hydrogen-powered automobiles through the FreedomFUEL Initiative. The NHA believes the President’s proposal to allocate $1.2 billion shows a firm dedication to the development of a hydrogen infrastructure which will be necessary to build a hydrogen economy. The funding, part of Bush’s energy security plan “to promote energy independence . . . while dramatically improving the environment,” is a large step forward for hydrogen as the link between the fossil fuels of today and the clean, self-sufficient energy of tomorrow. “We’re thrilled with President Bush’s commitment and the emphasis he placed on developing applications for hydrogen,” commented NHA President, Jeff Serfass. “Particularly, we support the President’s recognition that hydrogen will play an important role in ensuring energy security as well as protecting the environment.” Bush’s proposal is the most recent in a series of initiatives that the Administration has supported since the announcement of its National Energy Policy, in May 2001. The National Energy Policy proposed that hydrogen would be an important clean energy carrier for the future. Later, in January 2002, FreedomCAR was announced, the Cooperative for Automotive Research between General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler, which was designed to address the need for the development of fuel cell technology.

Renewable Hydrogen Energy System For Households Application Junlin Ma, P.R. China November 1999 Lund University International Master Programme in Environmental Science Abstract The purpose of the paper is to define and analyze a renewable hydrogen energy supply system for households use. The energy system combines solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen production, fuel cell and households energy supply. The components of the system are available, but have not yet to be integrated in this way. This study concentrates on solar energy as problems of wind energy are of similar nature. The main advantages and problems of this system are discussed from technical, economical and environmental aspects. The possibility of applying this system into China is discussed and evaluated. Calculations of components size are made based on a Chinese village. Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces are recommended as suitable regions for application of this system. " Hydrogen Hawaii video
tells larger H2 economy story."
Scientific American's Fuel Cell Industry Report
July 2001 Videographer Richard Masters, a high-altitude logistics support specialist at California's White Mountain Research Station, has directed and produced the 60-minute video "Hydrogen Hawaii: A Symphony of Resources" detailing the unique reality of the Big Island's energy quandry. While Hawaii already has geothermal resources, photo-voltaics and wind farms (though they have fallen into disrepair), the island remains totally dependent upon foreign oil. "Being cut off from natural gas pipelines and not tied to a continental energy grid, Hawaii represents almost textbook case energy dependency," states Dr. Tom Koppel, author of Powering the Future and narrator of the video. Guided by the vision and efforts of Hawaiian House Representative Mina Morita, Chair of the Committee on Energy and the Environment, Hawaii has the potential to break what Koppel calls "the fossil-fuel based paradigm" and capitalize upon renewable energy resources, eventually to produce and export hydrogen becoming entirely energy-self sufficient in the process. While the video focuses on Hawaii's potential, it presents a good overview of the fuel cell industry and a hydrogen economy, including interviews with fuel cell system OEMs such as Ballard Power Systems, as well as representatives of other state governments and agencies, the DOE, and the California Fuel Cell Partnership.

In the future, our energy systems will need to be renewable and sustainable, efficient and cost-effective, convenient and safe. Hydrogen has been proposed as the perfect fuel for this future energy system. The availability of a reliable and cost-effective supply, safe and efficient storage, and convenient end use of hydrogen will be essential for a transition to a Hydrogen Economy. Research is being conducted throughout the world for the development of safe, cost-effective hydrogen production, storage, and end-use technologies that support and foster this transition. This book is a collection of important research and analysis papers on hydrogen production, storage, and end-use technologies that were presented at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in August 1999.
