I garden in The West of England within the Exmoor National Park. Having retired I have developed an interest in hydrangeas. I would like to build a collection of the various species and cultivars. I grow them in the garden and in 16 inch pots. At present I have just 14 but growing.
Anyone else collecting hydrangeas who would like to communicate for a chat and to swap plants?
List available.

Hydrangeas make perfect plant gifts
By Norman Winter MSU Horticulturist
Mother's Day is one of the many good reasons to consider plants as gifts for the special people in your life.
This pink french hydrangea combines beautifully with the Mississippi Medallion award-winning, native oakleaf hydrangea. One of the best options is the French hydrangea, but don't let the French affiliation throw you. The hydrangea made its way to the United States during the 1800s and is loved throughout the South. Although it is called the French hydrangea, it is really from Japan. The French only did a little tweaking, but somehow they've got their stamp on the origination in many gardeners' minds. The hydrangea has been called the queen of the late-blooming shrubs. They brighten those partially shaded areas of the landscape like no other plant does. The hydrangea is suited to massing, using as specimen in-between evergreens and even in large containers. The flowers are great for cutting and bringing indoors for drying. If you think about it, it is remarkable when a plant performs in soils that are either acidic or alkaline. It is even more wonderful that the plant has large pink flowers in soils with the higher pH and blue in the soils with the lower pH.

Unless you live in a Hardiness Zone 6 one of those small protected pockets in the foothills of Denver or Boulder a lovely blue or pink hydrangea is not going to grace your garden. But several other hydrangea species are yours for the choosing. The Climbing Hydrangea, H. anomala petiolaris, is a vine that can climb up to 75 feet. It is self-clinging, and bears flattened clusters of small white flowers. The vine becomes woody with age and will be shrubby and sprawling without support. In winter, the exfoliating bark is quite ornamental. Smooth Hydrangea, H. arborescens, is a shrub with an upright and dense habit that can grow up to 10 feet high and wide. The leaves are large and serrated. The preferred cultivar is 'Annabelle,' which produces enormous globular clusters of small white flowers. Hydrangea paniculata, also known as Peegee, produces cone-like panicles of blossoms and can contain both the small fertile and the large sterile flower. The shrub is coarser in texture, is upright in form, and can be trained to a 25-foot tree, though it performs best as an 8-to-10 foot bush. Leaves turn bronzy in the fall and most flowers turn pink as they age. Popular cultivars are 'Grandiflora' and 'Tardiva,' which blooms later.

Southern Belles in Northern Gardens
Hydrangeas Flourish in the Pacific Northwest
When I imagine a Southern garden, scenes of antebellum mansions with broad, shady verandas from Gone with the Wind spring to mind. Hedges of flowering hydrangeas fringe the stately homes, the deep green foliage trumped by flounces of lacey blooms in shades of dusky rose, cream, and pale pink. You may remember this Southern Belle from your Grandma's yard or recognize it as a staple of the cottage or Victorian garden. With a long history in American gardening, hydrangeas are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, due in part to style guru Martha Stewart's recent focus on the genus.
Mophead or Lacecap
The hydrangea is well-deserved of attention from the Pacific Northwest gardener. This hardy, long-flowering shrub is at home in Zones 5-8 and is at home as much in woodsy northwest gardens as on stately southern plantations. All a hydrangea asks is a spot ample enough to accommodate its sometimes prodigious growth, shade from hot afternoon sun, and regular water. If you accommodate these simple requests, you'll be rewarded with a lush, showy specimen that can blooms from mid-summer through frost when many gardens look a bit worn. Hydrangeas offer you considerably more than the globe-shaped pink or blue blooms commonly sold around Mother's Day. Choose a climbing species (H. anomala) that clings to supports with tiny aerial rootlets or scrambles over the ground as a groundcover when unsupported. The white-bloomed Annabelle (H. arborescens 'Annabelle') is a smooth hydrangea that produces huge clusters of white flowers all summer long.

3311 - Hydrangeas for St. Louis
Hydrangeas are medium to large shrubs noted for their small, clustered flowers that are often used in fresh or dried arrangements. The key is to let the blooms get fully mature before cutting. For dried arrangements, leave the water level low and let it run out the blooms will dry in an upright position or clip and bundle with a rubber band to let dry upside down in the garage. Smooth hydrangea ( Hydrangea arborescens ) is a native shrub to Missouri. It produces white blooms in early summer and likes some shade where the soil remains moist. It is subject to wilting in dry soils, so avoid west exposures where it's hot. These plants bloom on new growth, so can be cut back each season. 'Grandiflora', otherwise called hill-of-snow, is a popular cultivar. Similarly, ‘ Annabelle' is another good choice with bigger and more numerous blooms. For both, some deadheading will prolong the bloom into fall. Panicle hydrangea ( H. paniculata

Hydrangeas are native to China and Japan. They have been used as house plants and garden highlights since the early 18 hundreds. Hydrangeas love our cool coastal areas and will tolerate heat up to 90 degrees for short periods. They like diffused light, and acid well drained soil. Feed your hydrangeas with cotton seed meal. This is a good acidic organic food which will help release aluminum in your soil and give you a variety of colors on your bush. The colors will range from pink, purple and blue. After each blooming season, cut your hydrangea back to 4 or 5 inches above the ground. This will prevent rangy uneven growth. If you choose to keep your hydrangea as a house plant, remember these easy steps:

I'd be tempted to head south to Bridgemere Garden World near Nantwich - see link below. I find their range and quality of plants superb and the staff very knowledgeable. I'm not usually keen on going to large businesses for my plants but this place does offer a superb choice. Here is a link that might be useful: Bridgemere

So what have you been doing to keep cool on these hot summer days? When I go outside in the 95 degree heat, I begin sweating and am soaked with even the slightest exertion. Just dead-heading my plants becomes a chore. So you know I was drenched when I decided to put in yet another flower bed. Up my driveway, between my house and my brother's house, is an area of grass in the full sun. Over the past year or so, the grass has been dying off and has left an unsightly patch of brown grass that the weeds are taking over. I proceeded to dig it up, incorporating some composted cow manure, leaves and fertilizer. I soaked it all good and then went to mom's house and helped her thin out the red Salvia as well as her yellow Four O' Clocks a whole wheelbarrow full. She tossed in a large Jewel of Opar and some Centratherum for good measure and I came home to plant this excess horticulture in the new bed. To round out the height, I added some

The weather fluctuates from hot to cold with plenty of rain and fog thrown in for good measure. Yesterday I was in the garden in shorts. Today, it is bitterly cold and very windy. There are, however, some very important things a gardener must tend to in February If you are lucky enough to have a pecan tree now is the time to fertilize it . Use any well-balanced fertilizer. All citrus also needs to be fertilized this month. pruning your roses, This is also a great time for starting seeds in flats.

Seasonal tips Now's the perfect time for planting, repotting and rejuvenating your plants. Jack Hobbs gives us a few pointers. Summertime, the living may be easy but the gardening is harder. And now is premier planting time. So whatever your favourite vegetables might be - courgettes, pumpkins, kumara, eggplants, corn, green peppers (or orange, red, yellow or purple for that matter) - now's the time to start planting. Tomatoes Get those tomato plants in now. Grafted tomatoes are important because they double the vigour of a plant. It makes them disease-resistant, they have a bigger root shoulder, and they produce by the hundreds. They also need plenty of feeding. A good tip for tomatoes is to put a teaspoon of milk powder under each when you plant them. That will stop that uneven ripening on your fruit. If you've had it one year, you'll have it again because it carries over. Then, when the first truss of flowers open, put a good teaspoon of sulphate of potash in the soil. That will give you good red colouring and good fruit set.

Choose a location that does not get hot afternoon sun. Prepare a hole approximately twice the size of the root ball. Hydrangeas like slightly acid soil (pH of 4.5 to 6.5). If your soil is heavy, incorporate some humus-rich material - bark or compost - with the earth you took out. Backfill the hole as you plant such that your finished job leaves the surface (top of the root ball) about 4cm above original soil level.
If done right the settled new soil will not leave a depression for water to stand in. Water in well and keep moist in hot weather until well established. Use an annual application of balanced fertilizer with an eye to how it may affect your soil pH levels.
