The Hurricanes lack of depth was very prevalent, the side lacked togetherness without stars Tana Umaga, Jonah Lomu, Dion Waller and Rodney S o'oialo. There were some glimpses of good form, with Shannon Paku's try looking all too easy. In the end it was a below average result in a below average season. Christian Cullen again showed great improvement in his form in Friday night's 44 - 20 loss to the Chiefs Canes Down The Drain Hurricanes rugby coach Graham Mourie refused to discuss his future last night after his side ended the 2002 Super 12 with a disappointing 44-20 loss to the Chiefs in Hamilton. But there's no doubt the sympathetic feeling towards Mourie, after the unlucky Waratahs loss in Sydney a fortnight ago, has dissipated to the stage where his fate hangs in the balance.

Catastrophic Weather and
Climatic Change GS-140
[Gary Lash, Room 104, Houghton Hall, Fredonia State University College, Fredonia, NY 14063]
Catastrophic Weather and Climatic Change , a GCP Part II course, considers the violent meteorological events that seem to be occurring with greater frequency. Specifically, we will address numerous questions concerning these events. For example, why do hurricanes always move from east to west? Is there a correlation between the number of hurricanes that develop each year and average sea surface temperatures? Why are tornadoes so common in the middle part of the country during the early part of spring? What is a Nor’easter and why do they move to the north along the east coast of the United States? Perhaps the greatest question regarding fierce weather events concerns what they might tell us regarding changes in our climate. How do these occurrences and such global phenomena as El Nino and the attendant "strange weather" fit into present models of climatic change?
Introduction to Course
The first part of Catastrophic Weather and Climatic Change concerns several severe weather phenomena, including tornadoes, hurricanes and Nor-easters, as well as some basic concepts of meteorology, most notably global circulation. Following this, class focus will be directed to various mechanisms of climatic change, the most recent climatic model and data that suggests that global warming is not a simple as generally presented by the popular media. Finally, an alternative hypothesis that proposes that the global warming we are experiencing will be followed by a cooling trend will be considered.

What are Hurricanes?
Most people associate twisters with tornadoes, but in fact tropical twisters come from hurricanes. Hurricanes are what scientists call "strong Tropical Cyclones". They are formed when large areas of the ocean become heated, and the air pressure over that area drops. This causes thunderstorms and strong surface winds. Cyclones develop over tropical or sub-tropical waters (for example, in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, or in the Pacific). As they travel long distances gathering energy from the ocean, they are likely to be classified as strong Tropical Cyclones. When the winds of a tropical storm reach 74 mph, then the storm is classified as a hurricane. One of NASA's most important missions is to develop an understanding of the total Earth system and study the effects of natural and human- induced changes on the global environment. To achieve these goals, NASA has developed satellites and ground programs which study and monitor hurricanes and other climatic events. ESE Kids Only Home ESE Homepage NASA

http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/sevweath/swwhatare.html
What Are Hurricanes?
Hurricanes are large tropical storms with heavy winds. By definition, they contain winds in excess of 74 miles per hour (119 km per hour) and large areas of rainfall. In addition, they have the potential to spawn dangerous tornadoes. The strong winds and excessive rainfall also produce abnormal rises in sea levels and flooding. Christopher Columbus was the first European in modern times to write about the hurricane. The Indians of Guatemala called the god of stormy weather "Hunrakan." Similar names were probably present throughout the Caribbean. Captain Fernando de Oviedo gave storms their modern name when he wrote "So when the devil wishes to terrify them, he promises them the 'Huracan,' which means 'tempest.'" The same storms in other parts of the world are known as typhoons, baqulros, Bengal cyclones and willy-willies. The ocean-water temperature has to be above 79 degrees F in order for a hurricane to be generated, so they normally form in late summer and early fall when the conditions are right. Meteorologists use the term tropical storm when a storm's winds are under 74 miles per hour, and hurricane when the wind speed rises. A hurricane has a peaceful center called the eye, that is often distinctive in satellite images. The eye stretches from 10 to 30 miles wide and often contains calm winds, warm temperatures and clear skies. Around this tropical bliss is a frenzy of winds gusting at speeds up to 186 miles per hour. If one percent of the energy in one hurricane could be captured, all the power, fuel, and heating requirements of the United States could be met for an entire year. It takes 500 trillion horsepower to whirl the great core of winds at such tremendous speeds. It is the equivalent of exploding an atomic bomb every 10 seconds.

    Why Cover Hurricanes?
Hurricanes are among the most violent storms people suffer in the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic states. They are news before they happen, while they are happening, and sometimes for years after they happen. Some hurricanes, like Hurricane Andrew, are mostly wind events. Others carry their punch with water. Last year’s Hurricane Floyd was such a water event — unleashing torrents of muddy, polluted water upon thousands of people in North Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Born far out in the Atlantic, Floyd generated winds topping 135 knots as it advanced upon the southeast U.S. coast September 13, 1999. After menacing Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, Floyd made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, on September 16 with sustained winds near 110 mph. The maximum storm surge struck at high tide, contributing to extensive overwash, dune retreat, and damage to homes on barrier islands. The water dumped by Floyd was devastating. Rainfall totaled a record 15 to 20 inches. Storm surges reached 10 feet in coastal North Carolina. This rain fell on lands still saturated from Hurricane Dennis less than two weeks earlier, and runoff was greater because water could not soak in. A month later, Hurricane Irene dumped another 5-10 inches of new rain on some of the areas hardest by Floyd. Floyd killed 57 people — the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Agnes in 1972. Most of those killed drowned in North Carolina as rivers unable to handle the deluge swelled beyond known flood plains. Damage estimates topped $3 billion to $6 billion.

    Hurricanes
by Rachel Rusch and Janira Vazquez, grade 8
Hurricanes are very destructive storms of nature. They consist of very powerful and deadly winds that measure from 200-300 miles in diameter. Near the center or the eye of the storm, winds measure up to 74 miles per hour or more. The heavy winds cause large waves which contribute to devastating floods. Over 90% of deaths in hurricanes occur from drowning.
    Development
Hurricanes develop from easterly waves in long narrow regions of low pressure from trade winds. There are different levels of intensity before a storm develops into a hurricane. It develops from easterly waves to tropical depressions, to tropical storms, then into a hurricane. They form in the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans over warm water in areas of low pressure; usually in the hurricane season of June to November. However, most storms occur in September. There are usually about 6-8 hurricanes each year.
    Effects
Hurricanes in the United states affect mostly the Atlantic ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. They move around the eye in a counterclockwise direction, and usually move west to gain power. Most affect the east coast greatly. Several storms have caused devastating results here in Florida. Including Hurricane Andrew . It was one of the most intense storms in the 1900's history of the United states.
