GEOGRAPHIC WHIZ KIDS FROM 12 COUNTRIES WILL COMPETE FOR WORLD GEOGRAPHY TITLE
WASHINGTON - Some of the brightest young geography brains in the world will face off at the National Geographic Society's fifth International Geographic Olympiad in Vancouver, Canada, on Aug. 1 and 2, 2001. Teams of students from 12 countries will meet at the University of British Columbia to answer questions on physical, cultural and economic geography in two levels of competition. Current world champions, the United States, will defend their title against teams from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Hungary and Romania will be competing in the Olympiad for the first time. "Promoting geography education is one of the core missions of the National Geographic Society," said John Fahey, Society president and CEO. "Studies have shown an alarming lack of geographic knowledge among the world's young people. The Olympiad provides a forum for top geography students from all corners of the globe to pit their wits against each other to determine which country's team is geography champion of the world. Each student gains knowledge of the other competing countries' culture and becomes a better global citizen for the experience."

THE INFLUENCE OF FRIEDRICH RATZEL ON GEOGRAPHY IN HUNGARY
The influence of Friedrich Ratzel's (1844-1904) activity is extremely diversified and divided in time in the geography in Hungary. In Hungary the influence of Ratzel was appeared in the dispute of the geography's research object and it's place in the taxonomy of science. It also showed up in the antropogeography and political geography. The influence of Ratzel was prevailed depend on the inner evolution of the geography in Hungary and in a wider sense on the political changes in the country. It could be divided into three separable periods: - Until 1948, the judgement of Ratzel and his activity was a question within the domain of science, among not only who appreciated Ratzel's activity and followed his opinion, but who queried or refused Ratzel's geographical view or it's major share. - From the communistic turn in 1948 to the end of the 1980-s the judgement of Ratzel was a question of policy instead of science. In 1948 he got the fascist record and it took him unfit for good society. His activity was condemned in stead of valuing it correctly. - From 1990 the opportunities of public act of political geography are gradu ally reforming in Hungary. The judgement of Ratzel's role in historic of ge ography and his significance become a question within the domain of science again.

A Brief History and Geography of Hungary and Visegrád
Hungary is located in the middle of the Carpathian Basin, surrounded by the high mountain chains of the Carpathians, which provide shelter against extreme weather. Most of Hungary’s territory is a plain, the fertile soil of which provides good conditions for agricultural production. There are seven national parks in Hungary (Hotel Silvanus is in one of them) and many smaller protected areas, in which genuine values or nature are preserved. Our Hungarian ancestors entered the Carpathian Basin in 896 A.D., from Central Asia. The Hungarian language is unique in Europe: only two distant relatives can be found: Finnish and Estonian.
The country was hit hard by World War II, and from 1948 till 1990, it was part of the Soviet Bloc. The end of Soviet rule led to the first free elections in Hungary in 1990. At that time, Hungarians saw a great potential in Central Europe to Become a pioneer in finding a third way, a solution for the social and environmental problems of humankind. Central Europe is a region of great ethnic and cultural diversity and an incredible pool of intellectual capacity. However, that hope is gone, we’ve become simply the backyard of throw-away capitalism...
Visegrád
Visegrád lies on the banks of the Danube, Europe’s second largest river, and was the frontier of the Roman Empire in the first centuries A.D. Here the Danube takes a huge horseshoe curve among the Miocene volcanic hills. Visegrád has been settled by different human civilizations for over two thousand years.

H ungary (lightly larger than Portugal) occupies the Carpathian Basin in the very centre of Eastern Europe. The 417-km long Hungarian 'portion' of the Danube River cuts though a southern extension of the Carpathian Mountains at the majestic Danube Bend north of Budapest. The Danube divides Hungary’s 93.030 sq. km into the Great Plain (Nagyalfold) on the east and Transdanubia (Dunantul) on the west. The 598-km-long Tisza River crosses the Great Pain about 100 km east of the Danube. Hungary’s ‘mountains’ are actually hills that seldom exceed an elevation of 1000 metres (mountains in Slovakia, Romania and Slovenia reach over 2000 metres). The highest peak is Kekes (1014 metres) in the Matra range north-east of Budapest.

Although the declared accuracy of the data sets is of a 1:1000,000 map, it would be more realistic to assume the accuracy of a 1:2000,000 map. The layers used are: Digital elevation model 1000x1000m. Original US DMA DTED Level data with a 30-second resolution in 1x1-degree tiles were merged, projected into UTM co-ordinates, and filled to eliminate spurious sinks. Basin boundary vector layer was manually digitised using digital elevation data and hydrological network. Hydrological network vector layer was clipped out from the nation-wide data sets using the basin boundary coverage. Attribute data were supplemented with the names of the main rivers. Only principal watercourses are shown on the map Political / administrative units vector layer was clipped out of the larger data set. It has a network topology and contains data on boundary type (political/administrative), country name, province name, province area (sq. km), and province population (not reliable).

Jean-Philippe RAUD-DUGAL / Alain BOSSOUTROT HUNGARY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION Introduction:
Hungary presented its applications for membership of the European Union in 1994. Hungary's accession is to be seen as a part of an historic process, which would join to the E.U. a country of Eastern Europe, and permits a larger area of peace, stability and prosperity created by the Union.
What is Hungary's policy and economical system?
Will Hungary be able to fulfil the treaties of Copenhagen and Madrid (respectively adopted in 1993 and 1995) to enter the E.U.?
1. POLICY IN HUNGARY:
After the Second World War, the country was ruled by the Soviets, but in October 1956, the Communists put down an uprising for a return of a democratic state.
After the economic crisis in the 80's, Hungary adopted a democratic constitution in October 1989, after the resignation of the communist leader. In 1990 and 1994, there were free parliamentary elections and a peaceful alternation of power.
Hungary has concluded Basic Treaties with its neighbours for a Pact for Stability in Europe. So, its political institutions function properly, elections are free and fair, the rights of minorities are guaranteed. But, they have to make more efforts to protect the Roma, for the coordination of the juridical system, and for the fight against corruption. In fact, Hungary presents the characteristics of a democracy with stable institutions guaranteeing the rule of law, Human rights and respect for protection of minorities.

Geography of Hungary
The course introduces the foreign students to the physical, social and economical geography of Hungary. At the beginning of the course the students get more information about the land of Hungary : geology, climate, hydrography (with special respect to the flood control), vegetation, soils and the different regions (paying special attention to the most actual physical geographical problems, national parks and other protected areas). The second unit consists of information about the social geography of the country, focusing on the following topics: decreasing number of inhabitants, quality of health service, unemployment minorities (i.e. gypsies), sustainable development. At last the students get information about the socialist and post- socialist development of the economy i.e. closed factories and mines, new multinational companies, changes in land-use etc.
