home l hungary l language l culture connections The official Hungarian State was established in the Carpathian Basin in 896 by Magyar tribes who settled therein. The Magyar tribes were nomadic peoples who have been linked to many societies and races, including the Huns, and Turks. It is most probable that the Magyars were actually descendants of the Finno-Ugrian peoples who once roamed from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. Over time these nomadic tribes developed traditions and practices similar to those of the Huns and Turks from their contact with those societies. In 960 the Hungarian leader Geza established an alliance with Otto the Great of Germany, allowing Christian Missionaries to expand their work into Hungary. As a result of Christian influence, Geza's son Vijk was baptised with the Christian name of Istvan, (Stephen). In 1000 A.D. Istvan Kiraly, (King Stephen) became the first Christian King of Hungary. They have toured, recorded extensively over a long career, and rightly deserve to be as famous as they are. Here are reviews of a number of their albums over the years. Morning Star Hannibal/Ryko (1997) Morning Star Kismet Hannibal/Rykodisc Kismet Apochrypha Rykodisc MUSIKAS The Prisoner's Song Hannibal Transylvanian Portraits (Koch International) by Okros Ensemble Maramaros: The Lost Jewish Music Of Transylvania (Hannibal/Rykodisc) teams them up with some musicians from the Maros region in an effort to recover the music of the Hungarian Jewish traditions of the area. It also includes some names from the Okros album, including Csaba Okros, Balough (who's cimbalom playing on "Tune From Maramaros" is one of the highlights of the album) and Sebestyen adds a few vocals. It is the music itself that makes this album such a treat, the mix of Hungarian delivery and Jewish verve and pathos makes it stand out from anything else you have heard. KAMPEC DOLORES This band has taken the folk rock of England and the jazz of New York's downtown scene and married it with a touch of Hungarian roots to make Levitation (ReR Megacorp, 19-23 Saviors Rd., London SW2 5HP, England). Hungary's ties to the gypsies and other eastern sources bleed into everything this group does, making what is otherwise a hard rock album seem ethereal and aloof. Modal sax lines and thundering tom-tom drums clash with electric guitars and Glass-like repetitive synth lines. Over all this heavy handed instrumentation is a wispy female vocalist, Gabi Kenderesi, who also adds some violin in the mix. Musikas meets Fairport Convention, and talks about Kate Bush's punk years.

As the scene ages, it’s slowly segmenting by style, and it’s got its fair share of high-styling personalities, egos, factions and conflicts too, so some scene elements will be missing at the Sziget. But a map is no place for anti diplomacy... In Hungary, drum ‘n bass, trance, techno, and house dominate, with d ‘n b growing big time. If there’s any gap, it’s speed and UK garage. But with all the visiting stars, there’ll be, like always, something for everyone on the Island.
