HUNGARIANS IN AMERICA
H ungarian emigrants happy to have found freedom and a chance for a fresh start, worked hard, studied, and quickly became good citizens. The receiving countries were happy with the newcomers who were eager to give of their talent and experience and help build their young adopted country. More than half a dozen earned Nobel prizes for their new country. Life in America would probably be different without St. Louis Post-Dispatch publisher Joseph Pulitzer, Paramount Studios' founder Adolph Zukor, conductors Antal Dorati, George Solti and George Szell, actresses Zsa Zsa Gabor and Mariska Hargitay, actors Tony Curtis, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi and comedian Ernie Kovacs, jazz man Gabor Szabo, football heroes Joe Namath, Larry Csonka and Don Shula, and financial giants Andrew Sarlos and George Soros, the philanthropist. Three famous physicists who attended the same school in Budapest went to America, helped to win the war and, for better or worse, changed history forever: Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller are recognized for their work in the field of atomic and nuclear energy. Andrew Grove (András Gróf) runs Intel. Let's not forget to thank Agoston Haraszthy for bringing over those wonderful vine shoots, the foundation of the California wine industry. Hungarian contribution to the development of America is extensive.
OUT OF THE MELTING POT
W ishing to be loyal citizens of their new country, some Hungarians changed their names and stopped speaking Hungarian at home to help their children adapt. Fortunately, you may meet a Susan Wood who speaks only English-but still has lingering childhood memories that tie her to Hungary and the Hungarian culture. Or perhaps while researching or putting together the family tree you have discovered ancestors who came from Hungary. Why don't you come to Hungary this year, and get to know your ancestral land and learn about your roots first hand!

Maintaining Hungarian Culture on the Internet Presented by Lél F. Somogyi at the 42 nd Hungarian Congress, November 29, 2002 Internet creates opportunity to get in touch and exchange information anywhere Unfortunate effect is that there is too much information – information overload Most people don’t know how to become actively involved, so they remain passive Information on the Internet: Essentially all information is equal and all of it is free Immediately available anywhere Anyone who knows how can use the Internet to publish information What is needed to maintain Hungarian Culture on the Internet: Cultural “librarians” to organize and evaluate available information Writers to digest and summarize, and create new content Publishers to create and maintain websites and “portals” of information Audience of individuals who care about information that is provided Issues facing the Hungarian World Community on the Internet: o Use of multiple languages – not just Hungarian o Technical hurdles to using the Internet and publishing on the Internet o Competition from everything else Some of the hundreds of Hungarian links: http://directory.google.com/Top/World/Magyar

Country Info Hungary Introduction Hungary General Data Hungary Maps Hungary Culture ... Hungary Time and Date Hungary Culture Back to Top The ancient Magyars had a rich folk culture, which incorporated Eastern themes into its folktales, art, and music. Following the Hungarian conversion to Christianity in the 10th century, pagan and Eastern cultural elements were replaced by Western cultural and social patterns, and Latin became the official and literary language. During the 15th century Italian artists and scholars introduced the humanistic Renaissance into Hungarian culture. In the 16th century Hungarian replaced Latin. In the 18th and 19th centuries Hungary absorbed the Age of Enlightenment and Western European liberalism. The early 20th century saw the rise of the “West” school of Hungarian intellectuals, who favored the integration of Hungarian cultural elements with modern Western culture. After World War II (1939-1945) the Communist regime made efforts to pattern Hungarian culture after that of the USSR. The cultural milieu of Hungary is a result of the diverse mix of genuine Hungarian peasant culture and the cosmopolitan culture of an influential German and Jewish urban population. Both the coffeehouse (as meeting place for intellectuals) and Gypsy music also have had an impact. Cultural life traditionally has been highly political since national culture became the sine qua non of belated nation building from the early 19th century. Theatre, opera, and literature in particular played crucial roles in developing national consciousness. Poets and writers, especially in crisis situations, became national heroes and prophets. Governments also attempted to influence cultural life through subsidy and regulation. During the state socialist era culture was strictly controlled; party interference was influenced by ideological principles, and mass culture was promoted.
