The Human Body: An Online Tour
The human body is the most fascinating and fantastic machine in existence. No one understands all of its many mysteries; and no single source can do justice to its many parts. This week, Education World tours the Web to find the best "human body" sites. You won't believe what we discovered! Included: Sites for all ages. Activities too! Do your students know that
  • more than half the bones in the human body are in the hands and feet?
  • the highest recorded "sneeze speed" is 165 km (102 miles) per hour?
  • the heart beats about 3 billion times in the average person's lifetime?
  • a newborn baby has 350 bones, but a fully-grown adult has only 206?
  • blood is a liquid organ?
  • everyone is colorblind at birth?
  • the surface area of the lungs is approximately the same size as a tennis court?
  • food will get to your stomach even if you're standing on your head?

Our original lesson plans are developed by Thirteen Ed Online Master Teachers. Starting with tried-and-true lessons that work in the classroom, our Web-savvy teachers have built Web-based activities that use the rich resources of Thirteen/WNET New York and the Internet.
Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.
Cyber Currency, Currently
This mini-unit (set of lessons) uses games, easy explanations, and the "Trading Places" episode of the popular animated series CYBERCHASE to teach kids about financial literacy. Kids learn the value of currency and how to save and earn interest. In a key lesson, kids even get to purchase items in their classroom's general store. It's a fun way to learn the importance of being financially literate!
Filling Empty Pockets
In this lesson, students explore the concepts of borrowing and credit with an emphasis on credit cards. Students learn how credit works, why banks and other corporations extend credit, and what credit consumers need to know, including how to preserve their access to credit and how to avoid "credit trouble." Students also consider the real cost of buying on credit, weighing the costs and benefits of credit purchases against the option of budgeting and saving. Finally, students will consider various real offers made by credit providers and decide which offer, among several, is the best.

Lesson Plan: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Length of sessions:
  • Three 20 minute sessions
  • Three 30 minute sessions
Introduction Activity (30 minute session)
Play the game "Simon Says" using the directions to touch: head, shoulders, chest, neck, elbow, etc. (body parts). Keep the game at a lively pace and observe students to see if they touch correct body parts. Following the game, ask one student to volunteer to lie down on a large piece of butcher paper or craft paper. Teacher traces his/her outline. Ask the students to add eyes, other features and to name the body parts they know. Label the drawing as the children give responses.
Activity 1 (30 minute session)
Read and discuss A Very Quiet Cricket
Activity 2 (30 minute session)
Show the large line drawing of the cricket to the students. Ask the students to recall their observations of the cricket and help to label the drawing. As children mention body parts, label them both with their words and the anatomically correct name( Cricket Diagram (labelled) ). Explain that: "This is the term entomologists use. Entomologists are scientists who study insects." For example: chest and thorax, stomach and abdomen, eyes and compound eyes. If the students suggest the word "antennae," label it. If not, this would be a good time to explain the function of the antennae. Continue to label the cricket using the guide provided with the lesson. Give the crickets to the students for a second observation period. If some of the crickets have died, they can be put in an "Observa-scope," or "Bugbox" for closer observation. (Dead crickets may not be pleasant to handle or look at, use discretion). The students may want to handle the dead crickets to observe them more closely. Provide copies of the cricket drawings to be taken home and shared with the parents.

http://ww2.saturn.stpaul.k12.mn.us/hmong/lessonplans/Vocabulary/vocabulary.htm
A key part of any second language acquisition is vocabulary development and retention. These lessons are designed to teach students new vocabulary in both Hmong and English and are intended to move the students towards a mastery in both languages. Students will learn spelling words, translate words and sentences into Hmong or English, do word finds, arrange words in "A-B-C order," and do other things in line with the basic theme of a two or three week unit.
Most of the words are "White Hmong." Therefore, some students may have different ways of saying and spelling certain words. Lessons are in order and they build upon former lessons.

The Teacher's Resource Guide, which was prepared with the help of professional educators life yourself, will further your students' understanding of the body's organ systems and how they work together; and the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body. The material in the guide is designed for use with students between the ages 8 and 13. Activity 1 includes space for a Body Maintenance Plan for student self-assessment and for tracking information learned as students work on the various activity masters. Be sure to send copies of the letter on page 24 of the guide home with your students so they can share it, as well as their Body Maintenance Plan, with their parents, guardians or caregivers. I hope you and your students enjoy viewing The Human Body as much as we enjoyed making the film and bringing it to you!
