Hands up, those of you who have French Protestant ancestors. If those ancestors were from (primarily) the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, do I have good news for you! Now a collection of seventeen volumes about Huguenots, their family histories, biographies, and immigration details is available on one easily-searched resource. Immigrant Histories: Huguenot Settlers in North America and Europe, 1600s-1900s is another fine compilation of resources published by Broderbund in collaboration with Genealogical Publishing Company. The CD contains information about approximately 19,000 individuals (that's a whole lot of Huguenots!), and includes the following volumes:
  • History of the Huguenot Emigration to America , by Charles W. Baird

I'm Angie, and welcome to my genealogy page. My roots are in North and South Carolina as far back as I've been able to trace, so I've just "erased" the state line in my geography! Most of my family is from around Chesterfield County, SC and Anson County, NC, with another healthy portion from the area of the former Orangeburgh District. I hope to include not only my own family charts and group sheets, but letters, history, family stories and so on from the area. If you have a web site that relates to genealogy or the history of the region, and would like to see it included, please let me know . I'd also like to hear from you if you have any sort of information you'd like to see on-line, but don't have a site of your own for it. I'd be glad to include it here (and a link to your mailbox!).

In the picture left to right are Albert Rosamond, William Rosamond, Bob's Grandmother, Maude Rosamond, and Bob's father Robert Henry Rosamond.Bob's grandfather was killed in World War I. The Huguenots was a name given to the Protestants of France from about 1560 to 1629. Protestantism was introduced into France between 1520 and 1523, and many members of the nobility, the intellectual classes, and the middle class accepted its principles. At first the new religious group enjoyed royal protection, notably from Queen Margaret of Navarre and her brother, King Francis I of France. Toward the end of his reign, however, Francis persecuted the Protestants; his successor, Henry II, followed his example. Nevertheless, the French Protestants increased in number. At their first national synod (1559), or council, 15 churches were represented. At the next, held two years later, more than 2000 churches sent representatives.

The Huguenots
Home Research Genealogy Family Photos ... Mail Me A persecuted minority in France during most of the period from the early 1500s until 1789, the French Protestants were given the name Huguenots in the time of the Reformation. The word may come from the German word eidgenossen, or "confederates," a term once applied to Swiss Protestants. In their struggles for religious freedom, the Huguenots were driven to become a political party and even a "state within the state," headed by some of the greatest French nobles. By the middle of the 16th century, the Huguenots by their numbers and influence had aroused the fears of the Catholic party and the powerful family of Guise. Eight separate religious wars followed. The first war began with an attack by the duke of Guise and his followers on a congregation of Huguenots assembled for worship in a barn. A period of peace that followed the third war was broken in 1572 by the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, the most dreadful of the many crimes that marked this era of religious and civil warfare The Huguenot wars ended in 1598, when Henry IVwho had been a Huguenot but who had agreed to conform to the Roman Catholic churchissued the Edict of Nantes. The edict gave the French Protestants political rights, religious freedom, and the possession of certain fortified towns. Despite the edict, the Huguenots were still harassed and persecuted from time to time, and when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685, all protection of law was withdrawn from the Huguenots. Although they were forbidden to leave France, hundreds of thousands fled. They carried French arts, manufactures, and culture to England, Germany, the Netherlands, and the British colonies of North America.

Huguenots in the Netherlands
At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century the Netherlands was enriched with a big stream of refugees from France. They were the so-called Huguenots and many settled permanently. They also fled to England, Germany, Switzerland and the English colonies in North America, including Massachusetts, New York and South Carolina. The estimation is that between 400,000 and 1 million fled from France. The chance then becomes very likely that, as we research our family genealogy, we will discover Huguenots in our branches. This seems to be the case in the search of my forefathers and gave me a reason to investigate the Huguenots on a larger scale. In the 16th century, in France, a following evolved of Calvinism, a reformed Protestant stream. The followers of this new religious stream became known as Huguenots. It is not known where the name evolved from. It may a bastardisation of Eidgenossen (eiguenots in French). Protestantism and it's principles, as it was known, was accepted by many members of the nobility, the intellectual classes and the middle classes. It included Queen Margaret of Navarre and her brother, King Francis I of France. It also became more political as from the year 1560. At the end of his reign, Francis began to turn against the Protestants and Henry II, who was the successor followed his example. However the French Protestants grew in numbers and at their first synod (1559) 15 churches were represented. Two years later at the second synod more than 2,000 churches were represented.
