The breaking out of war between France and Spain in 1635 caused a large influx of Protestant refugees into England from Picardy, Artois, Hainault and Flanders. Amiens was the capital of the Amienois in Picardy. The Huguenots were in full force in Amiens. Louis de Berguin, a Walloon from Artois first maintained the Reformed doctrines in 1527 and was burnt in Paris for these beliefs. In 1568, 120 Huguenots were slain in the streets of Amiens and a repetition of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Paris was only averted in Amiens by the Governor of Picardy. In 1594 the citizens of Amiens acknowledged the newly turned Catholic Henry IV as their King. Shortly thereafter, the Spanish occupied the city. After the Edict of Nantes, Amiens became the centre of a flourishing trade and commerce although by 1625, Huguenot worship had been banished beyond the gates of the city. Huguenots could not meet for worship within the city walls without risking the wrath of mobs. By the Edict of Nantes only two towns were allowed for the Huguenots to build churches: Desvres in the Boulonnais and Hautcourt near St. Quentin. The Picards were French, but of mixed origin; descendants of both Belgae and Celtae who occupied the border between these two ancient nations, that is the district which parted the Celtae from the Nervii, the most invincible of the Belgic tribes. They had an affinity to the

In the 1500s, the Protestant Reformation was gaining strength in France, as it was in much of Europe. Most French Protestants were known as Huguenots. While the Reformation led to fighting between Catholics and Protestants in many countries, some of the worst violence was in France. In the mid-1600s, King Louis XIV decided to eliminate the Huguenots from France. Huguenots fled from the country. After spending some time in Holland, Germany, and England, many of them sailed to America. In the 1660s and '70s, some Huguenots started settling in the village of Esopus, New York. But Esopus was a Dutch community, and the Huguenots wanted a place of their own. They found a beautiful spot of land near the Wallkill River. Other European settlers before them had taken land they wanted by cheating the Native Americans (Indians) who had lived there for centuries. The Huguenots took a different approach. They recognized the Natives' right to the land and carefully negotiated a peaceful purchase from them. On September 15, 1677, the Natives officially sold the land to a group of 12 Huguenot men. Two weeks later, on September 29, the colonial governor of New York signed a "patent" confirming this purchase. (Because of this, the 12 Huguenot men became known as the "Patentees.") Early in 1678, the Huguenots moved to the new community, which they named New Paltz. A key player in these negotiations was a Patentee named

Hello, listers Yes, I'm back on my own computer which is finally fixed and in good shape. My apologies to all for sending that off-topic message yesterday about my predicament. I guess I was feeling a little nervous at having "my baby" (ie. the list) unattended for three whole days!! I also knew that others were waiting for replies off-list. Now, back to on-topic subjects. For those listers who are researching in the Channel Islands, there is quite a comprehensive web site called Channel Islands Genealogy which is at URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/ci.html . You will notice John Fuller's name in there. It's the very same John Fuller who has another site which I've mentioned before, ie. The Huguenots
A persecuted minority in France during most of the period from the early 1500s until 1789, Huguenots was the name given in the time of the Reformation to the French Protestants. The word may come from the German word Eidgenossen, or "confederates," a term once applied to Swiss Protestants. In their struggles for religious freedom, the Huguenots were driven to become a political party and even a "state within the state," headed by some of the greatest French nobles. By the middle of the 16th century, the Huguenots by their numbers and influence had aroused the fears of the Catholic party and the powerful family of Guise*. Eight seperate religious wars followed. The first war began with an attack by the Duke of Guise and his followers on a congregation of Huguenots assembled for worship in a barn. A period of peace that followed the third war was broken in 1572 by the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, the most dreadful of the many crimes that marked this era of religious and civil warfare.

Tracing French Ancestry Q: Could you supply me with any information as to how to find information about ancestors from France? I have two versions of the story. The first version is that my ancestors came from Nantes and were French Huguenots. The second version says that they came with Lafayette to fight in the American Revolution. The family name is Fancher, sometimes spelled Francher or Fancier. Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Caroline A: You will want to be sure that you are not overlooking valuable records because you have these stories. It is one of the temptations that researchers must fight against. Often, when a family story talks about a relationship, like yours does, it is hard to resist the temptation to head right for records on the Huguenots or for those who traveled with Lafayette. By doing that, however, you could overlook records with clues to where your family truly came from. While you continue to work from the known to the unknown in the researching of your lineage, you can begin to amass some information about the Huguenots and those who fought with Lafayette in the American Revolution.
