Thomas Cole at Mount Holyoke The Hudson River School painter inspires a play and an exhibit. By Chris Rohmann The centerpiece of the current art exhibit at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, is the most famous and influential of all American landscape paintings. "View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm" (more commonly known as "The Oxbow") was painted by Thomas Cole in 1836. On loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it anchors the exhibit "Changing Prospects," an array of artworks and artifacts celebrating the mountain as an inspiration for both art and tourism. In connection with the exhibition, the Mount Holyoke College Theatre Department is producing the biographical play "Thomas Cole: A Waking Dream." In "The Oxbow," Thomas Cole juxtaposes wilderness with civilization, sunshine with storm clouds, a rugged mountainside overlooking a tranquil valley. In his play about Thomas Cole, Donald Sanders juxtaposes fact and fancy, realism and surrealism, humans and angels. "Thomas Cole" is a whimsical biography of the founder and leading figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. English-born, Ohio-bred, with little formal training but a prodigious talent and an expansive imagination, Cole revitalized the landscape genre by combining the eye of a realist with the heart of a romantic. At the age of 24, Cole was famous and sought-after, the first American celebrity artist.

Hudson River School During the Mid-19th century, the period of Romanticism and Transcendentalists, Thomas Cole founded the Hudson River School. This was the first school of painting in the United States. Located in Northern New York by the Hudson River, the paintings focused on the nature and wilderness of the surrounding area. Each picture includes extreme detail of nature to show human emotions. Some artists include: Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, John Casilear, David Johnson, and Sanford Gifford. Generations of artists have come and gone and each brought their own flavor. Soon, the artists wanted to change their landscapes and paint areas in the West, including: the Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River, and the Grand Canyon. All were done with hard work and great beauty. In the time when nature, emotion, and expression of feeling showed, there was the Hudson River School paintings to bring out these such characteristics of the Mid-19th century. http://digimuse.usc.edu/landscapes/Cole.htm http://dfl.highlands.com/DFL_Painters/109.html http://digimuse.usc.edu/landscapes/Bierstadt.htm http://digimuse.usc.edu/landscapes/Moran.htm ... http://digimuse.usc.edu/landscapes/Durand.htm LINKS http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/Ho.html

The Hudson River School Painters
by Lynn Salerno
The paintings by Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and Frederick Church reveal the extent to which the Hudson River School was uniquely American. The landscape of America provided a rich and varied subject matter from which each of the three artists drew inspiration. Cole's paintings were dramatic and moody, such as seen in his Landscape with Tree Trunks . Durand's work was romantic, yet it had a softer, more intimate quality, his painting Kindred Spirits is an example of this. Church's painting Niagara Falls shows his skill at capturing the drama and power of nature in art. The Hudson River School painters embraced nature and the American landscape as a worthy subject of representation. Thomas Cole painted the land with a sense of the dramatic energies found in nature. His work, Landscape with Tree Trunks , shows a fierce storm brewing in the distance that is about to sweep across the rugged landscape. His use of color and tone unifies the composition and establishes the mood. Asher Durand's work shows the landscape of America in a different light. He was an engraver and used his abilities to capture the precise details of nature. Like Cole, Durand was a romantic, however, unlike Cole he often included a human element in his work. His painting

The Hudson River Museum has long been an important center for the arts in lower Westchester. And it has been getting better every year. It began with Glenview , the John Bond Trevor Mansion, a beautiful example of late Victorian style. Built in 1876, this house has been restored and is a showcase for an important collection of American and European fine and decorative arts. In an adjacent building, the museum's contemporary galleries provide a dramatic setting for changing exhibits of art, architecture, design, and history. The Museum is one of the best places to view works inspired by the Hudson, and has a national reputation for its collections of photography, paintings, graphic arts, and memorabilia relating to the region. Visitors can call for a current exhibition schedule as well as a calendar of the Special Events and Family Programs offered throughout the year, which include Tours, Lectures, Workshops, and other activities. Then there's the Andrus Planetarium . . . the only public planetarium in Westchester County. Here a Zeiss M1015 Star Machine, the only instrument of its kind in the northeast, portrays the heavens in an awe-inspiring fashion. Visitors will be exhilarated by the beauty of it, and educated at the same time.

Help Freddie the Fish dodge PCB's!
The Hudson River PCB Controversy
By Anjuli Singh and Revathi Annapareddy
Over the past twenty-five years, dredging the PCB's from the Hudson River has become a major source of controversy in the Hudson Valley.
Through various studies, scientists have uncovered many health risks associated with excessive exposure to PCB's. Not only are they carcinogenic, they are also the source of many birth defects. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that nobody eat fish or drink water from the Hudson River.
One proposed solution for the removal of PCBs from the Hudson is a process called dredging. Ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency, this is a highly controversial approach, as it will destroy the multiple ecosystems along forty miles of the upper Hudson. General Electric and assorted local citizens groups such as C.E.A.S.E. are adamantly opposed to dredging. "The truth of the matter is the river is cleaning itself," said Tim Havens, president of C.E.A.S.E.
On the other hand, environmental organizations such as Clearwater and Scenic Hudson strongly support the dredging plan. Within five year's time, they predict that dredging will eliminate nearly all the PCB contamination of the river. Rich Schiafo of Scenic Hudson said, "We have been working on this issue for close to twenty years to try to get the PCB contamination removed from the Hudson River so that we can fully restore and use the Hudson River."
