82. History Of Horticulture - Wilson, Ernest Henry 1876-1930
The China Mother of Gardens is stated to be the most comprehensive authorityand readable book on China horticulture, botany and physical characteristics
http://www.hcs.ohio-state.edu/hort/history/130.html
Wilson, Ernest Henry 1876-1930 E rnest Henry Wilson was born in Gloucestershire, England on February 15, 1876. After some years in school he began work for the Hewitt Nurseries at Solihull, Warwickshire. In 1892 he was asked to come to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and at the same time he studied botany in the Birmingham Technical School where he won the Queen's Prize. At twenty-one years of age he went to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Shortly he became a teacher of botany in the Royal College of Science at South Kensington, now a part of the University of London. Interestingly the famous firm James Veitch and Sons was seeking a man to explore inland China for the purpose of locating the Dove trio Davidia Involucrata , accounts of which had been sent by Dr. Henry, an earlier plant explorer. Ernest Wilson was assigned this responsibility. Later Wilson sent back many of the collected seeds from his explorations to this nursery among which were these of Meconopsis integrifolia Astilbe davidi Pheum alexandrae Senecio clivorum Paonia Veitch , and Clematis Montam rubens At the beginning of his trip the elder Veitch reportedly said to him, "My boy, stick to one thing you are after and do not spend time and money wandering about. Probably almost every individual plant in China has now been introduced into Europe." This set of directions are interesting in view of the fact that Wilson himself subsequently introduced from China at least 1500 plants hitherto unknown.

Histoire - description des embellissements - dépenses de création et d'entretien des Bois de Boulogne et de Vincennes. Champ-Élysées - parcs - squares - boulevards - places plantées. Étude sur l'art des jardins et arboretum. 2 vols. Paris, J. Rothschild, 1867-1873. sold ¶ Two vols. (44 X 73 cm.). Pag.: 414 pp. With 487 wood engravings, 80 steel engravings and 23 large lithographic plates. Splendid set of these exceptionally large volumes in cont. full red morocco, gilt ornamented spine. Jean Charles Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891) is best known as the main assistant of the Paris city planner Haussmann. Alphand earned Haussmann's esteem as a graduate at the Ecole Polytechnique in Bordeaux. He was summoned to Paris in 1854 to take charge of the Service des Promenades and thus became the landscape architect for a great number of public squares as well as the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes. After Haussmann's fall from power Alphand took over many of his reponsibilities and pursued his projects. In 1870 Alphand was promoted to Colonel by the French defense government, which entrusted him with the fortifications in Paris. Afterwards he pursued an administrative career and succeeded in consolidating all public affairs under his supervision. He ended his impressive career as director of the World Fair in 1889. Immediately after his death in 1891, Alphand was commemorated with a monument in Paris.
