HERBERT HOOVER (1874-1964) U.S. President 1929-1933
Selections from the Archives of American Art From the papers of illustrator Benson Bond Moore, 1882-1974 , an autographed photograph of soon-to-be President Hoover with his dog, 1928. In this campaign photo, the president poses with his dog, "King Tut." Though he was perhaps the cutest, King Tut was not the only White House pet. Hoover's second son, Allan Henry Hoover, had two alligators that were at times permitted to roam around the White House.
Silver gelatin print, 30.4 x 25.2 cm. Also found are two letters, including one from Mrs. Hoover to Moore dated May 24, 1930, thanking him for a copy of "that unique water color of Latrobe's showing St. John's Church in 1816, and the ruined White House in the distance." (23.5 x 15.5 cm.); and one, September 10, 1931, showing payment of $34.00 for etchings "retained by Mrs. Hoover" which were delivered to the White House.

Herbert Hoover The nation's 31st president lived for three years in Salem from 1888-1891. While living here, he made two of the most important decisions of his life: 1) that he wanted to become an engineer and 2) that he wanted to attend Stanford University. A display in the Society's museum highlights Hoover's life here. In addition, the Society has published three detailed articles about Hoover's life in Marion County. They are available by sending $6 to Hoover Articles, Marion County Historical Society , 260 12th St. SE, Salem, OR 97301. Born in Iowa in 1874, Herbert Hoover became an orphan at age 10 and joined an aunt and uncle, Henry J. and Laura Minthorn, in Newberg, Oregon, in November 1885. Hoover moved to Salem in the summer of 1888 where Mr. Minthorn had become president of the Oregon Land Co. "Bert," as he was known then, began working as the company's office boy for $15 a week. His duties included driving potential real estate buyers to land for sale in the Salem area; taking care of the horses used by the company; substituting as a streetcar conductor; and general office work. Through his job, Hoover learned typing and bookkeeping. Hoover lived with his aunt and uncle in a new house that was part of Salem's Highland addition developed by the Oregon Land Co. The house still stands, although it has been significantly altered.

    Herbert C Hoover, president
Abraham Lincoln is often admired as being the man who was born in a log cabin, but through hard work and overcoming many adversities he arose to become President of the United States. The same can be said about Herbert Hoover, yet most people seem to remember is that he was President when the depression hit. And most of the blame was put on his shoulders. Even today when the economy is on a downswing you will here people say, " Well the Hoover days are upon us again." If one takes a look into the life of Hoover they will find a man who knew poverty, sorrow, and the value of hard work. bodyOffer(17051) Herbert Hoover was born in 1874 to poor Quaker family in Cedar County Iowa. He was the second child in a family of three children. By the time he was eleven both parents had died. The three Hoover children (older brother and younger sister) were separated and lived among various relatives. For the first few months Hoover lived with and uncle and aunt, who owned a farm. On the farm young Hoover did his share of the work on the farm. He cleaned out the barn, milked the cows and even work in the potato fields. An uncle in Oregon, who had just lost his son, decided he wanted the orphan Hoover to come live with him. So Hoover spent the remainder of his childhood in Oregon, where he received his basic education. He proved to be a very bright student.

Herbert Clark Hoover, 31st U. S. President He was born in Iowa, in 1874, but was orphaned at a young age. He attended Sanford University, and graduated with a mining engineering degree. He did some work in California, but was soon sent to survey a mining enterprise in Australia. In 1898, he was the chief mining engineer for the Chinese government. While there, he and his wife witnessed the Boxer Rebellion where he acquired experience in relief operations. After World War I began, Hoover organized food relief for the Belgians at the request of the American Ambassador in London. In 1917, Hoover was summoned back to the U. S. to head up the Food Administration. This led to an appointment as Secretary of Commerce under Harding. Hoover ran for President against "Al Smith', a Catholic. The campaign, which was about tariffs and wet/dry issues, was really overshadowed by concerns about the Vatican controlling the White House if Smith was elected. Hoover was a one term President, not because he wasn't an effective Executive, but more because he presided during a difficult time in American History, the "Great Depression." I've provided a straightforward Royal line of descent for Herbert Hoover. To see more details of his ancestry, just click on the links provided in the above line of descent. Enjoy!!

Once upon a time my political opponents honored me as possessing the fabulous intellectual and economic power by which I created a worldwide depression all by myself.
Fishing is much more than fish. ... It is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers. Words without actions are the assassins of idealism. Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt. Many years ago, I concluded that a few hair shirts were the part of the mental wardrobe of every man. The president differs from other men in that he has a more extensive wardrobe.

His goal was to be a mining engineer. His Presidency: During Hoover's first year in office the stock market crashed and the country headed toward a major depression.
