http://www.mesoamerica-travel.com/english/honduras/ecotourism/birdsindex.htm
Birds Honduras, may be Central Americas best kept natural secret. A mid 1990’s estimate put Honduras at having the largest percentage of forest covered land in all of Central America, more than even our famous neighbors Costa Rica and Belize. Due to Honduras geography these forest areas cover a wide range of eco systems. Over 30 cloudforest areas can be found in Honduras, more than in any other Central American country. Honduras is also home to many areas of tropical rainforest, pine forest, savannas, mangroves and coastal lagoons. Alot of larger forested areas of Honduras, have been made into National Parks or Protected Areas over the last 10 years. Honduras is home to 725 bird species that cover 58 families, and we are still counting. The wide range of forested areas in Honduras offer something for the novice, experienced or the adventurers birder. There is though a few hot spots that should not be missed. Hot Spots for Honduran Birding Tela Bay and the nearby Lancetilla Botanical Gardens are a must for all birders. Punta Sal and Los Micos Lagoon which are located on Tela Bay, offer excellent birding for lagoon, mangrove and coastal species. These wetlands are a haven for large numbers of Ibis, Herons, Gulls, Egrets, Terns, Sandpipers and the inpressive Roseate Spoonbills. The Lancetilla Botancial Gardens are one of the largest tropical gardens in the world. Home to a wide variety of trees from all over the world and a protected nature reserve. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in the gardens and surroundings, toucans, tanagers, orieles, trogons, motmots, antbirds, ovenbirds and a variety of colourful parrots are but a sample of the rich bird diversity.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became as independent nation in 1821. After two and one-half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982. During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan government and an ally to Salvadoran government forces fighting against leftist guerrillas. Honduras is the second largest of the Central American Republics, with an area 112,088 square kilometers (44,500 square miles). It is roughly comparable to the state of Ohio, bordered on the northwest by Guatemala, on the southwest by El Salvador, and on the southeast by Nicaragua. Its Pacific coastline consists of a 77 mile arc along the Gulf of Fonseca in the south. The Caribbean Sea coastline of 400 miles contains several excellent ports and makes the North Coast the commercial hub of Honduras. Several small offshore islands, of which the Bay Islands are the best known, are also part of the national territory.
It is a mountainous country, with ranges from 3,000 to 9,000 feet in altitude covering 80 percent of the nation. Though fertile valleys and plateaus lie between the mountains and in the coastal areas, it is estimated that only 17 percent of the landmass is suitable for agricultural development. About 45 percent of the land is covered with forest.
The prevailing climate pattern is characterized by a wet season from May through October and a dry season from November to April. Climactic variations are more pronounced in the coastal lowlands, particularly in the North Coast, where major hurricanes as well as severe floods and droughts have been experienced in recent years. Temperate conditions prevail in the higher elevations.

    GEOGRAPHY
    Location and Boundaries
Honduras, located at the widest part of the isthmus of Central America, is the second largest Central American republic (see fig. 3 ). The triangular-shaped country has a total area of about 112,000 square kilometers. The 735-kilometer northern boundary is the Caribbean coast extending from the mouth of the Río Motagua on the west to the mouth of the Río Coco on the east, at Cabo Gracias a Dios. The 922-kilometer southeastern side of the triangle is the land border with Nicaragua; it follows the Río Coco near the Caribbean Sea and then extends southwestward through mountainous terrain to the Golfo de Fonseca on the Pacific Ocean. The southern apex of the triangle is a 153- kilometer coastline at the Golfo de Fonseca, which opens onto the Pacific Ocean. The western land boundary consists of the 342-kilometer border with El Salvador and the 256-kilometer border with Guatemala. Honduras controls a number of islands as part of its offshore territories. In the Caribbean Sea, the islands of Roatán (Isla de Roatán), Utila, and Guanaja together form Islas de la Bahía (Bay Islands), one of the eighteen departments into which Honduras is divided. Roatán, the largest of the three islands, is fifty kilometers long by five kilometers wide. The Islas de la Bahía archipelago also has a number of smaller islands, among them the islets of Barbareta (Isla Barbareta), Santa Elena (Isla Santa Elena), and Morat (Isla Morat). Farther out in the Caribbean are the Islas Santanillas, formerly known as Swan Islands. A number of small islands and keys can be found nearby, among them Cayos Zapotillos and Cayos Cochinos. In the Golfo de Fonseca, the main islands under Honduran control are El Tigre, Zacate Grande (Isla Zacate Grande), and Exposición (Isla Exposición).

Surface remains suggest these Indians were sea-oriented, but precise stratigraphic data is required for further research. Analysis of pertinent colonial literature indicates that few items of the aboriginal fishing cultures were adopted by early settlers, and almost none is to be found in the present inventory of equipment.
