21. Mostly Maya
Dwayne Shreve's budget travel guide to Maya ruins and culture in Southern Mexico, Belize, honduras and El Salvador, including links to local bus and air schedules.
http://www.mostlymaya.com/
Mostly Maya, An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget travel in the Maya areas and ruins in Mesoamerica simpler. I look for links which are relevant to visualizing and planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done along with the advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. The site is a hobby and takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for the inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other services. I also plug places I like while traveling or services that seem worthwhile to me. If there are worthwhile non-profit organizations in the Maya areas or dealing with the Maya who do not have a website, but have access to e-mail, there is room for them here without charge. I do add pages for commercial places I like while traveling, but that is not something that you can requested. See additional information Who are the Maya?

The Copan Ruins and town of Santa Rosa de Copan suffered minimal damage from Hurricane Mitch. They are fully accessible, and continue to welcome guests who are charmed by this cultural wonder.
Copan Ruins, HONDURAS
Tuesday - January 26, 1999
Honduran tourism officials, including the Minister Norman García Paz, have announced publicly that two tunnels used by archeologists to penetrate the interior of the great Mayan acropolis at the Copan Ruins, will be opened to the public next March. These two tunnels about three kilometers in total length, will permit tourists to observe first hand the latest archeological discoveries of the ruins.

Update on Roatan and Copan by Chris Mendez
My wife and I recently returned from our vacation in Honduras. It was amazing to say the least. We began with an 8-day stay on Roatan at The Inn of Last Resort. The diving was spectacular, the food was fantastic (even by San Francisco standards), and there was plenty of water at The Inn. The hurricane seems to have helped the health of the reef according to our hosts at The Inn. We encountered absolutely no problems on our trip related to Mitch. I wish the same could be said for American Airlines, but that's another story. Roatan is in very good shape and the resorts are in need of guests. We were able to rent a car and survey the island on our own and found very little damage relative to the images broadcast on CNN and others.
We also (on the spur of the moment) drove to Copan Ruinas on the mainland. The road was very good except for a washed out bridge right at the entrance to the town of Copan Ruinas. I've seen highway 1 here in California in worse shape. The people of Copan were very friendly and surprised to see tourists from the direction of San Pedro Sula. Most tourists of late had been coming from the Guatamalan border. Our news of Roatan was well received as they seemed to be under the impression that it was as devastated as Guanaja. We stayed at the Casa de Cafe and had a wonderful time. The Ruins were incredible.

The ruins at Copán in western Honduras indicate that the area was the centre of Mayan civilization before the Maya migrated to the Yucatán Peninsula. Most of the American Indians are Lenca and are now found in the southwest, near the Guatemala border, close to the most important Indian centres of the pre-Columbian period. Small, isolated groups of non-Spanish-speaking Indians—such as the Jicaque, Miskito (Mosquito), and Paya—continue to live in the northeast, although their numbers are declining. Of the total population, about nine-tenths is mestizo (a mixture of Spanish and Indian). Blacks of West Indian origin and Garifuna (Black Caribs) make up a significant part of the population along the Caribbean coast, an area where English is widely spoken.

Valle de Angeles revs into life as the Harley Davidson procession passes through. By RACHEL BURGESS
TEGUCIGALPA — The city became a deluge of Harley Davidson motorcycles last weekend, as Honduras’ CCM club hosted the first Harley Davidson tour of Tegucigalpa. The normally congested streets came to a standstill as police escorts held up traffic to allow the procession of Harleys to pass unhindered through the city. Their presence was warmly embraced as locals lined the sidewalks to wave and cheer as the bikes came roaring pass. The Central American Harley Davidson tour is held at least once a year in each Central American country and this is the fourth time it has come to Honduras. Harley Davidson enthusiasts traveled from as far as Argentina and Cuba to attend the convention as well as from neighboring Central American countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua. More than fifty bikes were present for the event, which kicked off on Friday at Hotel Honduras Maya. From there they visited an auto show in Boulevard Morazan, which exhibited the top 100 Harleys from the region. On Saturday, the usually dormant town of Valle de Angeles revved into life as a convoy of bikes came thundering through the narrow streets, before stopping to enjoy an afternoon of traditional Honduran cuisine and drink. The evening concluded with drinks at the newly opened ‘Biker’s Bar’ in Boulevard Morazan.
