Our image of a family is usually that of a father, a mother, and a child or children. But in today's world, that picture doesn't always reflect reality. Often little Johnny and Jane go home after school to grandparent-headed household. And many of these homes have no parent living there - the grandparent is the primary caregiver. What You Should Know
Who are they?
  • There are 4.5 million children under 18 growing up in grandparent-headed households; approximately one-third of these children have no parent present in the home;
    6.3% of all children in the United States under age 18 are growing up in grandparent-headed households; The numbers of children in grandparent-headed households have increased 30% since 1990;

The mission of America Walks is to foster the development of community-based pedestrian advocacy groups, to educate the public about the benefits of walking, and, when appropriate, to act as a collective voice for walking advocates. To carry out our mission, we provide a support network for local pedestrian advocacy groups. We offer advice about how to get started and how to be effective with public officials and engineering and design professionals.

The Jean Weingarten Peninsula Oral School for the Deaf, in Redwood City, California, is dedicated to meeting the educational and developmental needs of hearing-impaired children and providing support to their families. The services at JWPOSD include parent-infant and preschool programs, kindergarten to second grade education on campus, and comprehensive mainstream support services through sixth grade off campus. The school was founded thirty years ago by Leahea Grammatico and nine families to provide a learning environment that maximizes the use of each child's residual hearing and promotes the development of spoken communication through an exciting, interactive, cognitive curriculum. The outstanding staff at JWPOSD bring many years of educational experience and exemplify in their daily teaching the integration of thinking, listening, and speaking for each child. JWPOSD students develop their oral communication skills, their self-esteem, and a love of learning through small group instruction and intensive daily individual therapy which involves parents in every aspect of the child's program. "Parents as Partners" is the key to the eventual successful mainstreaming of every hearing-impaired child.

Critical Issue: Creating the School Climate and Structures to Support Parent and Family Involvement
ISSUE: school climate school-family partnerships . Such partnerships connect families and schools to help children succeed in school and in their future. OVERVIEW: The relationship between school climate and family involvement is reciprocal: Each one feeds the other in a cyclical pattern. In a positive school climate that encourages family involvement, the parents' perceptions of the school improve. Joyce L. Epstein, director of the Center on Families, Communities, Schools, and Children's Learning at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, comments on the positive results of a good partnership between schools and families. Excerpted from "Theory to Practice: School and Family Partnerships Lead to School Improvement and Student Success," by J.L. Preamble

Draft Standards
INTERSTATE NEW TEACHER ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT CONSORTIUM
Dear Colleague: For the past eighteen months the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), a program of the Council of Chief State School Officers, has been at work crafting model standards for licensing new teachers. Drafted by representatives of the teaching profession along with personnel from 17 state education agencies, these standards represent a common core of teaching knowledge and skills which will help all students acquire 21st century knowledge and skills. The standards were developed to be compatible with the advanced certification standards of the new National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. This effort takes another step toward a coherent approach to educating and licensing teachers based upon shared views among the states and within the profession of what constitutes professional teaching. This document addresses the knowledge, dispositions and performances deemed essential for all teachers regardless of their specialty area. It is chapter one of a long term effort. When these standards have been reviewed and revised, the Committee will begin the process of developing subject area standards for new teachers. This process will use the National Board's standards, accepted standards for student outcomes K-12 and this conception of common knowledge as its reference points. As an integral part of this process, the Committee will also work on the development of assessment prototypes for evaluating the achievement of these standards.
