Led by Education Reform Subcommittee Chairman Mike Castle (R-DE), Republican members of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce today formally announced plans to introduce legislation that would renew and reform the 1975 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and make improvements to a system that many parents and teachers say is overly focused on compliance with complex bureaucratic rules, and not focused enough on ensuring children with special needs are getting the education results they need. American Diploma Project (ADP): Aligning High School Academic Standards with Higher Education and New Economy Needs
http://www.achieve.org/achieve.nsf/DiplomaProject?OpenForm

Achieve, the Education Trust, the Fordham Foundation, and the National Alliance of Business have joined forces to establish ADP to help states strengthen their ongoing standards-based reform efforts and analyze whether they have set the bar for high school graduation requirements in reading, writing and mathematics in the right place. The partners believe that an American high school diploma should, at the very least, represent a "greatest common factor" of basic literacy and numeracy, a level that will guarantee all graduates a range of choices beyond secondary school. Five states, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Texas, are partners in this project.

Governor's Office of Early Childhood Development
A Message from Governor Paul E. Patton:
In the past few years, something has become very apparent to me. If the Commonwealth of Kentucky is going to take full advantage of the millions of dollars that we have invested in elementary, secondary, and higher educations, we must begin at the beginning.
The large and credible body of research that exists points to the fact that all of the environments in which young children spend time must be of the highest quality. The prenatal environment, the home environment, and the early care and education environment should enable each child to reach his or her full potential. Our KIDS NOW Early Childhood Development Initiative is the first step by Kentucky to reach our 2020 goal which says that “all young children in Kentucky are healthy and safe, possess the foundation that will enable school and personal success, and live in strong families that are supported and strengthened within their communities.”
Building on existing resources, fostering public-private partnerships, ensuring collaborative planning and implementation, and mobilizing communities have enabled us to implement this prevention program. The time is now. We can wait no longer. Our youngest citizens can no longer be neglected.
