Home Improvement and Conservation
Co-ops are always looking for ways to help their member-consumers save money. Below are a few programs being offered by select co-ops that help consumers make home improvements and conserve energy: EC Home
EC Home is a program offered through electric cooperatives in conjunction with the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC). EC Home is a home mortgage financing program that gives participating co-ops the ability to offer rural consumers a broad range of home mortgage products for new home construction, purchase of an existing home or a home equity loan. In addition, the program also offers member-consumers assistance in buying and selling a home. EC Home Improvement
A sister program to EC Home, EC Home Improvement takes co-op involvement inside the home to help consumers make improvements. The program allows homeowners to borrow funds at competitive rates for various energy efficiency-related home improvement projects like installing more efficient water heaters and air-conditioning systems or replacing old wiring systems with newer models. Other Programs
In addition to these programs, many co-ops offer rebate programs for purchasing new, energy-efficient appliances, surge protection to ensure that storms don't destroy valuable electronic equipment, and other programs to help make rural living easier.

Home Improvement Tips
Cut Summer Energy Costs Up to 15 Percent with Sun Control Window Film
(ARA) - During the summer, heat invades homes. In 2001, energy costs have unmercifully doubled in many communities from a year ago. Many homeowners do not understand that up to 15 percent of their average summer utility bill is due to heat pouring through windows. This heat gain puts such a load on air conditioners that they keep running. Electric meters keep spinning. As energy rates soar, everyone needs an affordable way to beat the heat. The Biggest Problem in the Home is the Window The best place to start cutting home energy costs is at the window. According to a Phoenix Tribune article, "Consumers Can Cut Utility Bills," Jack Haenichen, senior technical adviser for the Arizona commerce department's energy office, asserts that "40 percent of a house's heat is a result of its window space and approximately 50 percent of a utility bill can be attributed to them." For people out West, sun coming in means a lot of cash going out. The Best Solution is Sun Control Window Film James Dulley, author of The Sensible Home, says "Window film is your best solution to block heat and fading, especially if you are on a limited budget. The new summer/winter films save energy year-round." In his "Utility Bill Updates," Dulley recommends metallized polyester films that reflect summer heat outside and help retain radiant heating in winter, much the same way high-tech insulated windows do, at a fraction of the cost.

High Energy Bills? Even brand-new homes need more insulation
This article discusses insulating newer homes which already have insulated walls and attics. A separate article will discuss insulating older homes which have little or no insulation. There are many places where insulating and sealing air leaks gets overlooked or ignored when a new home is built. The good news is that it is fairly easy and inexpensive to fix these problems. In most cases, you'll save enough energy in one year to pay for the cost of adding insulation and sealing air leaks. Where to insulate and seal . . .

A STORY OF THE DAY - Wednesday 21st November 2001 National Home Improvement Council Awards Hundreds of people congregated from Lords to humble Council staff. 20 winners on the day, of which we were one. This picture shows the Gladstone Library at 1 Whitehall Place, The Liberal Club, Westminster.
Happy Councillors were not the main theme of the day, but this one was! We now know the result, second place to Birmingham City Council.
No wonder we are smiling. A rural Council winning prizes in two successive years is unheard of. The military did not look over happy though!!!!!! What damage did he do with that sword after this picture was taken?
