University College Alumni Link Vol. 19, No. 1 - Fall 2002
Teachers provide lifetime lesson plans
After celebrating an alumna’s 100th birthday in the pages of Link, we started wondering how many alumni we could find who are 90 or older. We published a request for news from this special population and were pleased to hear from quite a few lively nonagenarians. They were asked to reminisce about two things: their time at the University (most were here during the Depression) and their early teaching experiences.
Marian Lambert
(B.S., ’33, physical education)
Age 91, St. Peter, Minn. “The early thirties were hard times, and so we would all bring our lunch with us to campus every day. We’d sit in a lounge to eat and all prop our feet on the table. One day Dr. Norris walked in (J. Anna Norris, a pioneer in teaching women’s athletics at the U). She caught us, and we all jumped up. After all, we were supposed to be ladies.” “I was so happy to be getting paid to be a teacher in Glenwood Falls, Minn., after spending a year as a volunteer teacher in Florida. But in those days you didn’t stay in one place longer than two years. You kept moving up. So when an opportunity came in Sioux Falls, S.D., I took it.”

    Financial Literacy Begins at School!
According to the National Endowment for Financial Education , as few as ten hours of classroom instruction can be enough to persuade students to improve their spending and saving habits. This week, Education World offers four lessons to help get them started on the road to financial responsibility! Included: Lessons about budgets, credit cards, producers and consumers, opportunity costs, and business plans.
According to Youth and Money , a 1999 study conducted by the American Savings Education Council , fewer than half of U.S. high school and college students have a regular savings plan. Only about one-fourth of those students stick to a budget, and more than one-third don't keep track of their spending at all. Financial illiteracy isn't limited to students. Half of U.S. adults received a failing grade for their knowledge of basic economic concepts, according to a

Revue of British Writers: A Time-Warp Victorian Tea
Reprinted with permission by Sandra Comeaux
Note: This was modified from a lesson plan from the following book: Resource-Based Learning Activities, by Anne Bleakley and Jackie L. Carrigan, Chicago: American Library Association, 1994.
SUBJECT: Mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century British literature
TOPIC: Victorian and early modern British literature
RESOURCES: Encyclopedias in library, CD-ROM encyclopedias, Information Finder by World Book, books by and about the selected British authors, Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism, Moulton's Library of Literary Criticism, Dictionary of Literary Biography, Oxford's Companion to British Literature, The Critical Temper, and others
PRODUCT: With the English teaching impersonating Queen Victoria, each student is introduced to the Queen as the assigned author (or the spouse or the father/mother of the author). The "author" discusses personal/literary accomplishments, interests, and attitudes about contemporary Great Britain. The student may bring information on an index card and is required to bring a three-dimensional prop (usually a book written by the assigned author).
Alternative Lesson Ideas: The number of authors can be adjusted to correspond with the number of students in the class and the specific time period covered. A knowledgeable Queen Victoria or Prince Albert impersonator is imperative.

    http://www.andover.edu/iap/gecp/home.htm
Welcome to Global Economics Curriculum Project
    Philosophy
The inclusion of economics as a core subject in any global educational program recognizes the value of economic understanding in helping students comprehend the modern world and prepare for the 21st century. The principles of economics bear directly on the ordinary business of life for all the globe's citizens, affecting people in their roles as consumers and producers. Economics plays a vital role in village, local, regional, national, and international policy and helps students to ask and understand the question "why" concerning such issues as production, distribution, environmental use, poverty, entrepreneurship, and government policy. An education that is informed by world-class standards in economic education within a global/international context will enable students to understand the forces that affect them every day, helping them to identify and evaluate the costs and benefits associated with decisions that shape private lives and public policy. In addition, it is being increasingly recognized that economics education should not simply be reserved for the senior grades at high school or to college but should also be introduced throughout a child's education and taught in a variety of subjects. Economics includes concepts that get to the heart of human behavior, individual existence, and social community. Issues of decision-making and distribution are just as relevant to a first-grader as they are to a twelfth-grader and it is important that students are exposed to these concepts in a clear manner throughout their education.
