    Overview: In this lesson students will learn about the varying attitudes and definitions of land ownership held by Native and European Americans by studying a variety of primary documents from the nineteenth century. They will learn about how various treaties—the Homestead Act and the Dawes Act—affected both Native and European Americans. Students will discuss these issues in the form of a debate, and will also write journal entries.

  • Making Treaties and Weaving Wampum: Communication Across Cultures
    Overview: In this lesson students will be exposed to the cultural and artistic importance of wampum belts to the Native American tribes that George Catlin encountered on his travels, and the importance of the belts in American history as markers of relations between tribes and the U.S. Government between 1776 and 1878. Students will gain insight into the differing ways in which these cultures expressed ideas, values, and policy through objects, written documents, and oral traditions.

    General Social Studies Academy One Social Studies Curriculum Exchange This site contains the full text of dozens of lesson plans. The original group of 700 lesson plans were developed in the Columbia Education Center's Summer Workshops by a consortium of teachers from 14 states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, particularly the quality of math and science education.     Teacher Background:
    About 10,000 year ago, the Neolithic Age began. The Neolithic Age was a time of rapid change. Among the important changes of this age were the development of farming and herding. Farming in Europe, Asia, and other areas of the world developed by a long, slow process. Women did most of the gathering of plant foods and are considered the first
    farmers. During the centuries of transition, hunting and gathering existed along with simple farming and nomadic
    herding. At the same time, permanent settlements began to develop. People began to settle near the fields they had
    plantedusually near a water source. Most of the early villages, like Jarmo located in Iraq, consisted of no more than 150 people. People lived in simple houses with mud walls and reed roofs. The people of Jarmo raised barley and wheat, herded animals, and hunted wild game. One of the larger Neolithic towns was Catal Huyuk in Turkey. The 3,000 residents of Catal Huyuk, developed new skills. One was the ability to work with metal. As a result, they had many luxuries that other Neolithic groups lacked. The spread of farming in time led to changes in Neolithic technology. Harvests, which led to the storing of

    Web-Based Lesson Plans This collection of six lesson plans is a companion resource to The Adult Education Teacher's Annotated Webliography It has been compiled and edited by David J. Rosen, Director of the Adult Literacy Resource Institute, the Greater Boston Regional Support Center of the Massachusetts System for Adult Basic Education Support. The writers of these lesson plans are teachers (and other practitioners) who were enrolled in the Spring, 1996 Boston Internet Training Project workshops funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education.     • Display Children of WW2 Homepage on interactive whiteboard.
    • Briefly explain that the site is an exciting resource, which will help them to find the answer to the question: How did the War affect people's everyday lives? The question should be prominently diplayed throughout the lesson, for children's reference. Explain that each group will be assigned to a section of the site, which will provide them with different kinds of evidence. Investigation will be divided into Home life, Rationing, and Evacuation. Demonstrate by showing the first screen of A Wartime Home Rationing Challenge , and Evacuees' Letters , and outline activities.
