Stony Brook is the home of Long Island's largest private museum complex. Three separate museums offer visitors a unique opportunity to learn more about history and the arts. The Art Museum features a magnificent collection of masterpieces by William Sidney Mount and other notable American artists. Selections from the permanent collection are frequently displayed in the Members' Gallery, while the main gallery is the site of spectacular shows. Past exhibitions have included: Twentieth Century Long Island Landscape Painting; Black Printmakers and the WPA; Our Land/Ourselves: American Indian Contemporary Artists; and others. The Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum houses an array of over 16,000 artifacts representing 19th and 20th century everyday life. On permanent display is a collection of antique wild-fowling decoys and 15 furnished miniature rooms representing the history of interior design. There are also dynamic changing exhibitions, such as Innovative Traditions: New Expressions in Contemporary Quiltmaking; and From Music Halls to Movie Palaces, to name a few previous examples. The Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage House displays a selection of part of an internationally acclaimed collection of horse-drawn vehicles. Of particular interest are such remarkable vehicles as the Cabriolet, the Grace Darling omnibus, the Concord Coach, and a richly decorated Gypsy Wagon.
