Crossroads Desi Mind ... A Clarion Call by Melanie P. Kumar in Voices
20th March 2003 was a strange day in the life of Indians. While on the one hand we watched television and cheered on the Indian team in the World Cup semi-finals, on the other side, we watched the bombing of Iraq with the “weapons of mass destruction” in the possession of the United States of America. Read On The Mughal Empire by Ashish Nangia in Architecture Humayun, as we have seen, did not live to enjoy rule. His son and successor, Akbar (1556-1605 A.D.) was the first in a line of emperors that for the next century would establish Mughal rule over practically the whole of India. 68. Vegetarianism - Why Hindus Don't Eat Meat
An essay by Dr.Jai Maharaj covering the spiritual, ecological and health rationales on vegeterianism amongst Hindus.
http://www.flex.com/~jai/articles/hinmeat.html
Why Hindus Don't Eat Meat
Posted by Dr. Jai Maharaj Vegetarianism is the key to good health and happiness. The Hindu view is multi-dimensional, including the ecological, medical and spiritual, as is evident in the following excerpts from Hinduism Today Besides being an expression of compassion for animals, vegetarianism is followed for ecological and health rationales Reasons In the past fifty years, millions of meat-eaters Hindus and non-Hindus have made the personal decision to stop eating the flesh of other creatures. There are five major motivations for such a decision: The Dharmic Law Reason Ahinsa, the law of noninjury, is the Hindu's first duty in fulfilling religious obligations to God and God's creation as defined by Vedic scripture. The Karmic Consequences Reason All of our actions, including our choice of food, have Karmic consequences. By involving oneself in the cycle of inflicting injury, pain and death, even indirectly by eating other creatures, one must in the future experience in equal measure the suffering caused. The Spiritual Reason Food is the source of the body's chemistry, and what we ingest affects our consciousness, emotions and experiential patterns. If one wants to live in higher consciousness, in peace and happiness and love for all creatures, then he cannot eat meat, fish, shellfish, fowl or eggs. By ingesting the grosser chemistries of animal foods, one introduces into the body and mind anger, jealousy, anxiety, suspicion and a terrible fear of death, all of which are locked into the the flesh of the butchered creatures. For these reasons, vegetarians live in higher consciousness and meat-eaters abide in lower consciousness.

69. Hinduism. The Main Religion Of India
The most dominant religion in India is hinduism. About 80% of Indians areHindus. hinduism is a religion with various Gods and Goddesses.
http://adaniel.tripod.com/hinduism.htm
History Since independence Religions Caste System ... Religions in India Hinduism
Hinduism is a religion with various Gods and Goddesses. According to Hinduism, three Gods rule the world. Brahma: the creator; Vishnu: the preserver and Shiva: the destroyer. Lord Vishnu did his job of preserving the world by incarnating himself in different forms at times of crisis.
The three Lords that rule the world have consorts and they are goddesses too. Consort of Brahma is Sarasvati; goddess of learning. Vishnu's consort is Lakshmi; goddess of wealth and prosperity. Shiva's consort is Parvati who is worshipped as Kali or Durga.
Besides these Gods and Goddesses there are a number of other Gods and Goddesses. To name a few of them, there is Ganesh; who has an elephant's head and he is also a son of Shiva and Parvati, Hanuman; who is an ape, Surya; Lord of sun, Ganga Ma; Goddess of river Ganges; Samundra; Lord of the sea, Indra; king of the Gods ( but he isn't an important God), Prithvi; Goddess of earth, Shakti; Goddess of strength. The Hindus call their Goddesses 'Ma' meaning mother.
Some gods have more than one name. Shiva is also known as Shankar, Mahadev, Natraj, Mahesh and many other names. Ganesh is also called Ganpati. God Vishnu

Hinduism in its narrower sense, is the conglomeration of religious beliefs and practices existing in India that have grown out of ancient Brahminism Christian civilization. According to the census of 1901, the total population of India is a little more than 294,000,000 souls, of which 207,000,000 are adherents of Hinduism. The provinces in which they are most numerous are Assam, Bengal, Bombay, Berrar, Madras, Agra, and Oudh, and the Central Provinces. Of foreign religions, Mohammedanism has, by dint of long domination, made the deepest impression on the natives, numbering in India today nearly 62,500,000 adherents. Christianity , considering the length of time it has been operative in India, has converted but an insignificant fraction of the people from Hinduism. The Christians of all sects, foreign officials included, number but 2,664,000, nearly one-half being Catholics. Hinduism had become much more than a religion; it was a way of life . Caste was the social manifestation of the underlying Hindu concept of reincarnation causality and duty
The four original castes split up over the ages into myriads of subcastes . There was an elaborate system of precedence by which each group had a place above and below other groups. This was accepted due to the belief in reincarnation by which one was born into a particular group as a result of the reward or punishment for one's action in a previous life. Brahmins dominated over other the castes. The way of life of individuals was based on their birth and there was increase in ritualism and sacrifice
But, there were rebels against ritual, sacrifice and above all, against caste . Hinduism saw it's first rebel in Mahavira who founded Jainism and Gautam Buddha who founded Buddhism
    Shankara
Buddhism disappeared from India by the 12th century AD. Perhaps the Buddha's ideas were taken over by the great Hindu philosopher Shankaracharya in the ninth century AD, and were readapted to Hinduism, so as to make Buddhism no longer necessary. Whatever the reason, the
