Durchschnittliche Kundenbewertung: Nice, short, lots of good stuff left out. , 23. August 1998 Rezensentin/Rezensent: rikardb@nvg.ntnu.no aus Trondheim, Norway The book appears to be well classified, but the style is condensed and doesn't look much Indian. If it weren't called a source-book, I would have given it better grades, thank you. War diese Rezension für Sie hilfreich?

INDIAN CULTURE: THE SECRETS OF HINDU MYTHOLOGY
    by Sherine Boukri
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Autumn 2000)
India is situated in South Asia, which also contains Bangladesh, Buthan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sikkim, Sri Lanka, and Tibet. The three most dominant religions in South Asia are Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. Hindus are in all countries of South Asia; they count for more then 80% of the population of India. Hindus have moved to diverse places of the world, like Europe and America. Still, even today, Hinduism is very centred on "the source [...] the heartland" : India. This religion being so ancient, undefined and vague, Hindus were defined as "the religious remainder after one subtracts all Muslims, Jainas, Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Parsis, and tribals from the religious landscape of South Asia." Today, Hinduism is recognised as a separate religion. This religion is based on two major components: the beliefs and symbols, and the deities. Hinduism is based on three dimensions that are listening to the universe myhtologizing the universe , and swallowing the universe The most important deities in Hinduism are the Mother Goddess Durga , and the Trinity , Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Mythology and Iconography Siva: The Erotic Ascetic, Oxford University Press, New York, 1973. This book is an extensive examination of the mythological depiction of Siva. The text focus primarily upon Siva's paradoxical attributions, examining in incredible depth his erotic/ascetic polarities. The text links Siva to the Vedic depiction of Indra, Rudra and Agni and has subsequent textual evolution throughout the Hindu mythological canon. Doniger implements a unique methodological approach which outline numerous "motifs" and subsequently develops and elucidates them through her examination of Sanskrit literature. Hindu Myths, Penguin Books, London 1975. Trough textual analysis Doniger elucidates the nature of main deities within the Hindu mythological complex including Prajapati, Brahma, Indra, Agni, Rudra, Visnu and his Avatars, Devi and numerous others. The style of the text tends to offer her interpretation of a specific myth followed by an English translation of a Sanskrit source. Overall, an excellent introduction to the corpus of Hindu mythology. The Divine Consort: Radha and the Goddess of India

    Course Description
A survey of the religions of India, from ancient times until the present, through the distinctive beliefs, values, and practices of the major orthodox traditions. Topics covered include Vedic sacrificial polytheism, Upanishadic monism, Yoga, sectarian devotionalism, esoteric traditions, Hindu-Muslim syncretism, modem reformers. The course utilizes textual, historical, and anthropological sources. In the Fall 1999 course, special focus will be on the Ramayana. Course Design

In addition to examining fundamental doctrines and practices, anthropological readings and films provide case studies giving a sense of the living traditions known as Hinduism. Lectures complement the readings and video assignments but do not replace them. Note that the Required Readings indicated in this syllabus should be completed before the designated class. The Second Story Review, June 1997
I have to confess to knowing little about Hindu mythology. The acquaintance I had made with it before this book left me with an impression of a rich but often confusing and violent body of stories. Imagine my surprise, then, when I met Ganesha, the fat-bellied god with a human body, an elephant head, and four arms. This is a jolly god, a god of mischief, impulse, and such joie de vivre that he often dances with delight! He likes sweets, rides on the back of a mouse, and carries in his hands the symbols for good judgment, joy, sacrifice, and prosperity. Children can identify with him, but in spite of his child-like qualities, he is still a god, among whose 108 names are included King of Obstacles and Supreme Leader. It was Ganesha, according to one story, who showed Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva how to begin their ongoing tasks of creating, preserving and destroying the universe. He is the master of dance, the remover of obstacles, the bringer of luck and the patron of writers.
