The Faculty of Oriental Studies: Information about Hindi
Introduction to the Hindi language
Hindi is the most widely known tongue of India and has been recognised as its national language since 1947. Hindi is spoken and understood - either as a first or a second language - by a large number of people throughout North India from Assam to Goa and from Leh to Puri, and it is also taught to and understood by many South Indians. Those who know Hindi are also able to communicate with people from Pakistan because Hindi and Urdu share virtually the same grammar and a large part of everyday vocabulary. A command of spoken Hindi enables scholars travelling to South Asia to have direct contact with those who are not strongly influenced by English education and thus preserve a more genuine aspect of their Indian culture; it is helpful to reach people and communities sceptical towards Western scholarship. In the eyes of many Indians, a command of Hindi expresses respect for their living culture. A good command of Hindi is useful - if not necessary - in many fields of studies connected with modern and medieval North India such as History, Literature, Religions, Social Anthropology, Music, Linguistics etc.

Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford Raising the Profile of Modern India An Opportunity To Contribute Hindi Teaching Fund Established for the endowment of a permanent lectureship in Hindi at the University of Oxford Current situation The study of modern India already flourishes at Oxford; it is taught by distinguished scholars in the Faculties of Modern History, Anthropology and Geography, Social Studies and Oriental Studies (see our webpage http//:www.ox.ac.uk/aboutoxford/annualreview/05.shtml However, it needs a stronger focus. The University has been planning to create a Master’s degree in Modern Indian Studies, which will be inter-disciplinary and taught by South Asian experts from all those Faculties. A core part of this new degree will be a modern Indian language. While other languages may become available in future, we plan to start with Hindi. However, the University will not permit the new degree course to be launched until the post in modern Indian languages is at least permanent and preferably full-time.

news release Zi First to Market with Hindi-Based Predictive Text Input Products for Mobile Phone Users in India CALGARY, AB, January 13, 2003 - Zi Corporation (NASDAQ: ZICA) (TSX: ZIC), a leading provider of intelligent interface solutions, today announced the availability of eZiTap and eZiText Hindi for the mobile messaging market in India. eZiTap and eZiText are the first predictive text input solutions available in the Hindi language for implementation with device manufacturers for the large, untapped Indian market. "India is an increasingly important wireless market as mobile subscription has increased 500 percent since January 2000, reaching 9.7 million subscribers in December 2002," said Gary Mendel, vice president sales and marketing, Zi Corporation. "Mobile phone vendors are paying very close attention to India because recent projections reported by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) predict that the market will ramp up to 120 million subscribers by 2008," added Mendel. India's Ministry of Communications estimate 25 million short messages (SMS) are sent a day. An example of the growth of SMS in India was during last autumn's Divali festival, a popular annual religious festival held in New Delhi. SMS messages in India's highly populated capital city quadrupled during this time on Hutchison Telecom's GSM network during a key day of the festival. Zi's Hindi solutions offer unique functionality such as word prediction, learning and personalization to provide users with simpler and faster input over standard multi-tap entry. The eZiTap and eZiText Hindi solutions have been developed to deliver users text input interfaces that naturally represent Hindi's written language, the Devanagari script, on the handset's small form factor screen and nine-button keypad. This provides users with intuitive text input that are familiar, easy to learn, and fast to use.

Conversations Hindi is a modern Indo-Aryan language spoken in South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Nepal) and also in other countries outside Asia (Mauritius, Trinidad, Fiji, Surinam, Guyana, South Africa and other countries). Approximately six hundred million people speak Hindi, as either a first or second language. It is ranked among the five most widely spoken languages of the world. Along with English, it is the official language of India. In addition, it is the state language of Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Hindi, which is a descendant of the Sanskrit language, is not strictly the name of any chief dialect of the area but is an adjective, Persian in origin, meaning Indian. Historically, it was synonymous with Hindui, Hindawi, Rexta, and Rexti. The terms Urdu and Hindustani are also employed to refer to this language. However, these labels denote a mixed speech spoken around the area of Delhi, North India, which gained currency during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as a contact language between the Arabs, Afghans, Persian and Turks, and native residents. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script which is ranked as the most scientific writing system among the existing writing systems of the world. The Devanagari script is written from left to right and is a descendant of the Brahmi script which was well established in India before 500 B.C. The script is phonetic in nature and there is a fairly regular correspondence between the letters and their pronunciation.

Hindi Language Products The Hindi Language Is a member of the Midland group of Indo-Aryan languages, spoken as a first language by 225 million people throughout India, Fiji, and by many more as an immigrant language in Great Britain, South Africa, and several other countries. It is a union language, along with English, in the Republic of India, which has a population of 800 million. The official language of a number of Indian states, and a lingua franca in India for about half the population. There is little structural differnce between Hindi and Urdu, and the two varieties are often grouped together under the single label Hindi / Urdu However, there is a considerable cultural distance, Hindi being the variety in use by Hindus and Urdu by Muslims. Hindi also displays a marked influence of Sanskrit in its vocabulary. As a literary language, Hindi dates from the 7th century AD. The variety known as Braj Bhasa was the chief literary medium between the 15th and 18th centuries, but the modern literary language is based on a different variety, known as Khari Boli. It is written in the Devanagari alphabet.

    60. Studying Hindi/Urdu At Brown And Abroad
Except for language courses, instruction is in English. For beginning students,a special hindi language course is included in the program fee.
    http://www.brown.edu/Administration/OIP/files/programs/lang/hind01.html
Studying Hindi/Urdu at Brown and Abroad BEGINNING HINDI OR URDU (HN 10-20) Training in conversation, reading, and writing of modern standard Hindi and some elements of Urdu. The Devanagari script is taught. Emphasis is on the active use of the language. Those who already know the Devanagari but have rusty conversation skills may join the class second semester with the instructor's permission, which should be obtained before the end of the first semester. Those who prefer to learn Urdu and the Persian script should contact the instructor. INTERMEDIATE HINDI-URDU (HN 30-40) A continuation of HN 10-20, which is a prerequisite. Introduces the variation of the Persian script used for Urdu. Prepares students to communicate in written and spoken language. Activities are conducted in Hindi/Urdu. Meets four hours weekly. ADVANCED HINDI-URDU (HN 108) At this stage of proficiency, each student may follow an independent reading list that will be determined in consultation with the instructor and will depend on the student's needs and goals. The readings may include folk tales, journalistic prose, 20th-century literature, classical Urdu poetry of the 17th to 19th centuries, or subjects in nonfiction of special interest to the student. The class meets together three hours weekly for discussion. Each student will also spend one hour weekly with the instructor. May be repeated once for credit. Study Abroad The exchange program between Brown and St. Stephen's College and Lady Shri Ram College (for female students only) in Delhi provides a rare opportunity for Brown and non-Brown students to study directly at an institution of higher learning in India. Instruction is in English and the small Colleges combine an intimate atmosphere with the British teaching style.
