Aims
Investigations of the atomic nucleus and, of the fundamental forces that determine nuclear structure, offer fascinating insights into the nature of the physical world. The tools for probing these systems are high-energy particle accelerators and, more recently, colliding-beam systems. This module, designed as an introduction to nuclear and particle physics, is intended to give students a broad overview of the subject matter, and encouragement to seek further information. To this end, the topics are presented as a series of keynote areas forming the foundations of the subject.

Aims
Nuclear physics is an important area of application of the ideas of quantum physics, with applications that have significant impact globally. High-energy particle physics discovers and tests the laws of physics at the extreme limits accessible to human experiments. This module will provide a sound understanding of the physical principles underlying these areas.

Massachusetts) 02/04 Fri " Supernova Neutrinos and the Supernova Early Warning System 02/10 Thu 02/11 Fri " Modal expansions and the diagonalization of quantum field Hamiltonians " Dean Lee (U. Massachusetts) The first half of this talk is a review of the modal field approach to non-perturbative field theory. I illustrate and compare the two main computational strategies: Monte Carlo and diagonalization techniques. In the second half I discuss the problems of the diagonalization technique, in particular the challenge of storing and manipulating large Fock spaces (>> 10^6 states). I then discuss a new calculational technique which we call quasi-sparse eigenvector methods designed to handle such extremely large systems. I conclude by mentioning several possible applications to particle, nuclear, and solid state physics. 02/17 Thu 02/18 Fri 02/24 Thu 02/25 Fri " Neutrino Oscillations at Super-Kamiokande and MINOS " Mark Messier (Harvard U.) In 1998 the Super-Kamiokande announced evidence for neutrino oscillations, and hence neutrino mass, in its atmospheric neutrino sample. Since then, Super-K has nearly doubled its data sample placing strong constraints on the oscillation mode and parameters. In addition to the results from Super-K, I will discuss progress on the MINOS experiment which will direct a beam of neutrinos from Fermilab to a detector located 735~km away to confirm this evidence for neutrino oscillations, and further constrain the neutrino mass and mixing parameters.

Computational Approach
Accomplishments
During the past year we worked to automate the Nearby Supernova Factory image subtraction pipeline. We also began archiving data from the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) team, who built and operate the current JPL camera at Palomar as well as a camera on Haleakala in Hawaii. These efforts have recently come to fruition with the discovery of our first probable supernova from this most recent effort. (Note that in spring 1999 we lead a similar effort which used similar techniques to find over 40 confirmed supernovae.) Significance
