ZooFinder at CDF
Matthew C. Cervantes, Dave Toback, Sung Won Lee (Texas Aamp;M) The Fermilab Tevatron is currently the world's highest energy proton anti-proton accelerator. In this talk we present a new data acquisition monitoring program for the CDF detector, called ZooFinder. ZooFinder is designed to look at events in as close to real time as possible and searches for unusual events which could be indicative of detector or readout malfunctions, or possible hints of new physics. The objectives and benefits of the ZooFinder are presented.
Fast Neutron Flux Measurement through Neutron Activation
Jim Ferguson (Texas Aamp;M University, Department of Physics) Neutron activation of various materials is often used to detect the fluence from a neutron source. In this report silver sleeves were placed around individual Geiger-Mueller tubes, and set in a polyethylene box to measure the neutron flux from a D-D fusion pinch. The silver is neutron activated from the DPF neutrons which are moderated by the polyethylene box, and further undergoes beta decay which is detected by the GM tubes. Here, the calibration techniques of the detector set (polyethylene box, detector geometry, etc.) are discussed, and "On-the-Fly" calculations for a one-minute count are described.

Switch to Japanese PHENIX evidence of RHIC collisions recorded Thursday morning, June 15 after accelerator operators brought beams into collision in the PHENIX interaction region. Signals were recorded simultaneously in seven PHENIX detector subsystems: Zero-Degree Calorimeters (ZDC), Beam-Beam Counters (BBC), Time-of -Flight Detectors, Pad-Chambers, Drift Chambers, Time Expansion Chambers, and Electromagnetic Calorimeters (EMCal). The event display (upper right) shows reconstructed tracks pointing to the collision. The BBC (upper left) confirms that the collision occurred near the center of the PHENIX detector system. The EMCal displays (lower left) show the first measurements of transverse energy from RHIC collisions.

    http://hepstructure.inr.ac.ru/
HEP Structure Project Home Page Search Help High Energy and Nuclear Physics This is the entry page to the structure of knowledge in the subject field of high energy and nuclear physics. The structure was obtained by clustering the top cited papers of the SLAC SPIRES Before you start browsing over the themes, some notes are in order. Labeling the themes constitutes a considerable problem. At the moment, we give as a theme title up to four most frequent words from the titles of the papers the theme comprises. The abstracts of the themes contain up to 60 most frequent words from the titles. (Naturally, only the words from a table of relevant terms were taken into account.) We suggest the users to submit their versions for the titles and abstracts of the themes (there is a link to the submission forms on the theme pages). In the future, we plan to make a customization available in this service. Users will obtain the possibility to receive their own versions of the theme titles and abstracts in response to their requests. A procedure will also be developed to select the most adequate titles and abstracts for the public domain. Also, we suggest the users to consider the possibility of composing reviews of the themes. We plan to give later on a possibility to download the reviews in the TeX format. The idea is to transform them to a format suitable for automatic search (XML, MathML?), and provide a possibility to browse over the whole space of the collection of reviews organized hierarchically.

Critical Tool Library for High Energy Nuclear Physics Calculations Ported to CRAY T3E
LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY An international library of computer tools developed to support high energy and nuclear physics (HENP) research has now been adapted for use on massively parallel processor machines. The effort to make the CERNLib collection of codes available for use on MPP computers was led by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center ( NERSC ) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory , an NPACI partner. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center collaborated on the project. The library was ported to run on Cray T3E supercomputers at NERSC and the Pittsburgh center. The ported CERNlib modules will be available to researchers beginning this week (June 10). Completion of the project paves the way for conducting detailed simulation of physics data from such upcoming experiments as the STAR, (Solenoidal Tracking at the Relatavistic Heavy Ion Colider) detector being installed at Brookhaven. The detector is scheduled to begin taking real data starting next year. Closely coupled to the work is the U.S. Department of Energy's High Energy and Nuclear Physics Data Grand Challenge, a project to develop tools to allow physicists to analyze and manage the massive amounts of data which will be generated by next generation of experiments. According to Craig Tull, leader of the High Energy Nuclear Physics (HENP) Support Group at NERSC, the HENP community has traditionally relied on conventional UNIX platforms (workstations and servers) and there had been little incentive to port the CERNLib to massively parallel processor machines. Until now. With the STAR experiment, as well as the BaBar Project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, scientists will be confronted with huge quantities of data, and therefore need more powerful simulation tools.
