See Table 4 for a list of projects.
Modern accelerators generate vast quantities of data. These machines are operated for worldwide collaborations involving hundreds of institutions and thousands of researchers. New techniques for retrieval, visualization, and distribution of these data sets are required. For BNL, our own Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, as well as our participation in the Atlas detector at CERN, dictate that these issues be addressed. We will also address simulation issues in the design, operation, and control of accelerators. See Table 4.

DOE Portfolio Key This scheme has been developed from the DOE R&D Portfolio "Boxologies" for each of the four DOE mission areas. The "Boxologies" and the Portfolio for each mission area can be accessed at: http://www.osti.gov/portfolio/portfolio_overview.htm Please note the following: There are changes to the portfolio key, based on changes that DOE has made to the themes and areas within each mission. The majority of changes have occurred in the National Security and Environmental Quality Missions. These changes are highlighted for your convenience. You may assign more than one key to a single FWP, however, you must then provide a percentage for each assignment. For example, an FWP may be strongly related to "Exploring Matter and Energy- Complex Systems" , and also related (strongly or moderately) to "Fueling the Future - Efficient Energy Use" Please list both keys with a split to indicate your best judgement of the relationship (50:50, 75:25 etc.) . You can assign up to three separate codes to a single FWP. Last year, we did not give due consideration to the

he research of the High Energy Nuclear Physics Group focuses on the exploration of the equation of state of nuclear matter. The Purdue High Energy Nuclear Physics Group is in the forefront of this exciting area of research. The goal is the creation and observation of highly excited and unusual states of nuclear matter. Traditional nuclear physics has been devoted to the study of nuclei which are gently perturbed. Using high energy beams of particles, we can create states of nuclear matter that are far removed from the ground state. Understanding nuclear matter under these extreme conditions will provide fundamental information about the statistical mechanics of those particles (hadrons) that interact via the strong (nuclear) interaction. This experiment is at data taking stage at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). We are presently analyzing data from the experiment. For example, at sufficiently high densities and temperatures, neutrons and protons should "melt" into their constituent quarks, forming the so-called quark-gluon plasma. The resulting nuclear matter should be similar to that which may have existed some microseconds after the Big Bang. We are members of the STAR Collaboration that will seek evidence of quark-gluon plasma formation in collisions between ultrarelativistic gold nuclei. This experiment, to be performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (

High Energy and Nuclear Physics
The Office of High Energy and Nuclear Physics is a $1 billion per year basic research program that provides new insights into the nature of energy and matter and operates large world-class scientific facilities for the nation and the international community. High energy and nuclear physics research is conducted by over 3,000 researchers and over 1,000 graduate students from over 100 universities and the National Laboratories. High Energy and Nuclear Physics are concerned with understanding of matter and space-time at the fundamental level. There are many unanswered questions:
  • Why is the electron lighter than the proton?
  • Why is there more matter than antimatter in the universe?
  • What was matter like in the early moments of the universe?
  • Why are the weak interactions weak?
  • Why are there fundamental particles that play no role in normal matter?
  • Is there supersymmetry?

Grand Challenge on High-Energy and Nuclear Physics Data Access
Douglas Olson, Point of Contact, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Research Objective The purpose of this project is to develop techniques and tools that will enable efficient access to the massive datasets of modern High-Energy and Nuclear Physics (HENP) experiments. The prototype development is being carried out in conjunction with the computing facility and experiments at the Relativistic Heavy ion Collider (RHIC) beginning in late 1999. Access to these 100+TByte datasets by hundreds of scientists, in conjunction with carrying out the large-scale computations necessary to refine and reduce them to the essential physical properties buried within, is one of the forefront problems of high-performance computing today. By capitalizing on recent advances in storage systems (HPSS), object database technology (Objectivity Inc.), high-performance scientific computing (at NERSC) and expertise from several institutions across the U.S. we are able to address this important problem affecting fundamental science. Computational Approach The principle approach to this problem is to cast it in the form of an extremely large hierarchical collection of objects (some persistent and some transient) that experience has shown is very well matched to this event-based experimental data. Modern object-database technology allows us to address the issue of physical storage layout separately from the logical relationships between the objects. The primary issue for physical storage is to organize the data so that it is stored according to how it is accessed rather than by how it is generated.

http://www.collaborium.org/projects/kohenp/
Automated Organization of Knowledge in High-Energy and Nuclear Physics
About the project: B Contact person: G rigorii Pivovarov gbpivo@iitap.iastate.edu Preliminary results: H ere we put preliminary results on testing an algorithm for organization of knowledge. The algorithm input is a "directed graph", i.e., a collection of vertexes with directed links. In this particular test, the vertexes were scientific papers in the subject fields of high-energy and nuclear physics. A link points from a paper to another paper if the former cites the latter. The graph we used in the test contained about 63,128 papers. The number of links from a vetex varies. In average, it is about 15 links. We take the information about the links from the SPIRES HEP database at http://www-spires.slac.stanford.edu/spires/hep/ The algorithm computes by a certain rule a degree of closeness between the vertexes. In the computation, only the structure of the graph is used. Then, for any given vertex, the algorithm finds a vertex maximizing the degree of closeness. If for a vertex under consideration there is more than one " closest" vertex, the vertex is discarded. The empirical fact is that we avoid discarding well-cited papers in this way. After this we were left with 45,974 vertexes (papers). For any of those papers, there is a unique "most related" paper that cites it. We proceed to this paper, and so on.
